I haven't used one yet but it caught my eye a few months ago too. It has some good features to it and since it's an ARB product, it should be good quality.

Looked good in the flesh at SEMA yesterday as well.

ARB does like to put there brand on existing products. My ancient ARB fridge is a rebranded Engle. There lights are from Rigid
The lockers and bumpers are in house.

MSRP for the 10k is only $100 less than the MSRP for the 12k. Why would anyone buy the 10k?

It's intentional. They’re using price anchoring and upselling to encourage customers to buy the larger version. Plus the $100 increase across thousands of transactions add up. But customers also feel like they’re getting more bang for their buck.

Because an 8k has always been enough and it’s faster.

Bigger may be stronger but not always best. Or that’s my theory.1.5x to 2x the vehicle weight has been my go to and proven successful. That theory means I need a 28,000lb for the bus😂

I get that too. I did find it interesting they put a bigger motor on the 12k with the same gear ratio as the 10k and it’s no load speed is faster than the 10k. Most increase the gear ratio and increase the rating on a slower winch.

That’s probably why the 6k on the explorer is so fast, came with a 2.5hp motor and it has a 4.6hp motor from Warn’s fastest planetary winch. I just wish it didn’t take a truck to free spool it. Someone mentioned Carbon winch, to me that is their biggest selling point besides line speed, the pinky finger free spooling. Anyone that has drug a winch line up a grade on your hands and knees knows what I’m talking about lol.

I was surprised by how little of a difference there was in price.
I do wonder if the Warn Winch made in China is any different than the ARB winch that is also made in China, next to the Harbor Freight winch made in China.

The most problematic part of a 12V winch these days is the motor contactor. I think that ARB uses a UK sourced Albright DC88 solid state contactor, and the Zeon uses a UK sourced, Albright WL88 solid state contactor...ALL made in China.

So when the Chinese company that makes winches sells the US designed winch with UK specified components, the base cost is likely very similar. Then the margins are calculated, and then the product is sold at "market" pricing. Market pricing appears to be about $500 more than I would ever pay for a winch.

I used to think i had bought every winch known to man. But the one I got from Harbor Freight came free with an old trailer. I said I would replace it when it died. I've tried to kill it. I have neglected it, beat it, abused it, and hoped it would get stolen. It won't die. The remote did not last long, so I hard wired it direct. I think it's a Badlands. Other than a restored US made 8274, I think I'd buy another Badlands.

I looked at Warrior Winches at SEMA. They had a dual motor 8274 shaped winch. They didn't realize they copied a Giggle Pin.

Based on my exposure to production parts made there they could in theory be made by different factories and still share everything except for (maybe) the cosmetics.

I'm suspicious of them not knowing that they had copied gigglepin. Doesn't seem possible that you wouldn't research the market first.

I bought an ancient M8 that supposedly came off a Border Patrol truck. No contactor, no cable, smoked motor. $50. Tripped over it for a decade or more as I just never really seemed to get around to installing it on something. I bought a replacement motor for it not long after getting it, but no cable. Decided that I needed to use it or sell it, so I put it on the FSB. I was lucky enough to be able to buy an Albright from gigglepin, so I'm somewhat sure that it isn't chinesium. Built a wired controller using this switch, this cord, and this socket. One socket is at the front bumper and the other is under the dash inside.

When I stumbled onto another M8 for a too good to pass up price (steel cable but no contactor) I decided to put it on the Wagon. It was up near Clear Lake and the friend who grabbed it for me was authorized to dump the steel cable, made handling it much easier and I was planning on another Custom Splice line anyway. By then no Albrights available, at least none that weren't chinesium anyway. As I still worked for them I asked one of the EE's about a cluster of 4 GV200's from the load bank or some R&D testing or whatever. He wanted to know how much HP the winch had and then brought me 8 of them that are specific to some EV. Decades ago I put a Superwinch 2500 on the avatar and used Ford starter relays for it's reversing system, so wiring that up was nothing new. Copper pipe annealed dead soft and smashed flat makes an OK low budget bus-bar, so that combined with another control pendent the plan for the Wagon's winch control.

I know with the 8274 there is a lot of the geartrain spinning just by hearing it spinning up when you freespool and of course everything is turning except the motor. I found a YT of the carbon and it uses 3 planetary stages. The clutch disconnects the ring gear for the first 2 stages from the case so just the final planetary is spinning up and its 6 to 1 so thats the only increase in speed.of turning parts. Neat design.

I do like the breather that the Carbon winch has on it. I've long thought that the US winches all missed the boat on that front.

As I recall the M8 disconnects in about the same place within the gear redux system.

My Jungle winch has a clutch that just pulls a pin on the 2nd stage ring gear. I'm not sure how different that would be compared to the combo 1st and 2nd ring gear. Still a tough pull since you are still churning the 2nd stage planets through grease. But I understand why the 2nd stage planet is the one to disconnect. 1st stage alone would be almost nothing and 3rd stage would need to be real beefy as it would take the full torque of the winch drum.
