That was one thing I was thinking about, but I figured since you got the whole kit from WH, you had the right one. It possibly could be the wrong one.

Yeah, I’ll have to order one and give it a shot. I had the explorer pump already.

I’ll look in my stash this weekend too. I may have an extra. If I do, you can’t beat the price.

These pump issues are what I was attempting to lead you to through diagnosis, so no one is assuming. I we are still assuming the fitting is wrong, or the pressure valve is stuck. All easy fixes but without diagnosing the issue is genuinely the pump we are throwing mud at the wall and seeing what sticks.

I still for the life of me don't understand why no one uses a filter on steering kits, even going as far to say do not do it. I have yet to find a fault, but many benefits.

Installed the new fitting.. still now power steering. I did notice the brakes come to life though! They were not working previously. It also felt like the steering wheel “loosened” up when I gave it gas, but I can’t tell if that was just cause the truck was moving faster. From a dead stop, I can’t turn the tires. Back to the drawing board.

Progress.... tore the pump apart and found a chewed up o-ring. I think it was from the previous (wrong) fitting. I also think the valve was stuck open, not building pressure. I reinstalled the pump after cleaning it out and now it squeals lol. I call that progress. Attempted a quick bleed, but still not functional. This time as I rev the engine, I can turn the wheel from a dead stop. But wheels not budging at idle.

Wanted to close this one out.. It was the pump. Replaced with a reman explorer pump and all is good. I will put a beefier pump on my future upgrade list though, the explorer pump doesn’t quite move the 35s with ease

I'm a fan of using assist with most everything with oversized tires, it takes the load off of the steering box and puts on the axle where it needs to be. I've been asking a few of the steering companies to do a 1-1/4" bore ram for street and mild use for a long time, the closest I've come up with is 1-1/2" bore from west texas off road. There is no better way to add a steering dampener. It not only removes impacts from the steering system but provides assist turning, the best of everything.

Good luck on your pump and thank you for the update.

OP, did you ever resolve this? I literally have the same issue. Just got my Explorer swap running yesterday. 160,000 on the motor, probably the original PS pump. New power steering box and the WH hydro boost brake kit.

Nothing is leaking or whining. Seems like the fluid is flowing. I'm guessing my old pump is just not enough.

I think I'm going to try a new OEM pump and contact Lee power steering to see what they can do with my core??

Unless something has changed in the past few years, Lee won't do anything with your core. I had them build one of mine up 4-5 years ago and when I inquired about having some more done awhile back, they told me they weren't rebuilding or modifying the Explorer C-III pumps anymore. If you contact them, please let us know what their response on them today is.

Yes, solved. My what did it for me was the correct fitting and a new pump. The old one worked with the wrong fitting, but once I installed hydroboost on there I got nothing. I replaced the fitting first, it worked for a moment, then nothing. I think there was damage internally, so a new pump took care of it. All running good now. Although I might update to a saginaw pump at some point.

What OEM pump did you go with? I have the CARDONE 20274 in my rockauto cart right now... Was going to talk to Lee's as soon as they open first.
