Looking at a 4-speed manual transmission hooked to a NP 205 case (supposedly) that has what looks like a 'T' shift showing. 1) is this a possible combination and 2) is it worth the effort to change out my 3 speed on the 77?

Np 205 is hella stout, but has a meager 1.96:1 low range. That said, That combo is what I've run in my '77 F150 for most of my life, and it works great if you don't mind it shifting like a truck and not having overdrive. The NP435 is essentially a heavy-duty 3-speed with a granny gear, so it will drive similar to what you have now with respect to shift points and RPM's at speed.

The 1.96:1 gear ratio is actually a good thing if you ever want to add a doubler, as it narrows the gear splits. I'm pretty sure Nvrstk on here just swapped out an ATLAS for a n NP205 and BlackBox (or some similar planetary doubler box).

Is it a bear to swap out with the stock EB 3 speed and transfer case? Never dropped those pieces before. Any and all advice/opinions welcomed and greatly appreciated.

I am not a mechanic and I was able to swap out my C4/D20 for a 4r70w/NP205 combo. All I have left is hooking up the shift linkages and making my side mount for the np205. I know with the 4r70w's everyone recommends a side mount for the np205 since it is so heavy, not sure about the recommendations for it coming off a t18/t19. I would assume you would still want the side mount regardless. I am not familiar with the t18 or t19 but would also think you are going to need to make a custom crossmember.

Removal of the original drivetrain it's important to build the little rod to connect the shift linkage levers on the 3 speed together so the input shaft doesn't "fall" out making total disassembly of the 3 speed (in case you want to sell it) necessary.

Other than some kind of tranny jack, get a helper and start unbolting. I"m sure you'll need to fab up or maybe a vendor makes a motor mount for that setup.

Good luck, have fun!

Thanks for all the great info and advice. If I can find it, I made the tool to keep the pieces in place when I had a 72 with a 3-speed. Will probably get trans and T-case just to have extra gear, besides I do like a floor shifter.

Is the trans/t-case combo you're looking at out of a Ford? It has to be, or it won't fit.
Back then Ford was the only one to use the driver's side front output.

Sorry if you knew all that already, but it would be a shame to put all the time, effort and money into the purchase only to find out it's not compatible!

Good luck.

I'm not sure but is the 205 bigger? I thought I heard of some clearance issues swapping to it. Also when swapping the tranny I have a couple long bolts with the heads cut off for guides to make it easier to slide in and out. Especially with the t-case mounted to the tranny

I love my NP435 But it's adapted to my Dana20. .. Me & my Running Buddy did 2 of those NP435 SWAPS many years ago . The Np435 is not synchronized in 1st gear. & 1st gear is lower ''granny'' than the T18 & 19s.
I also have the NP435 in a 1980 Bronco & it has the NP205 in it.. We loved it when we started out hunting in New Mexico. & My NP205 shift in & out while driving in high range 4x4.
... I also have a T19 NOT mounted in anything . I keep questioning if I want a Dana 20 or the NP205 behind it.
..............
... Some one needs to chime in.. But I'm thinking the NP205 is longer & your drive shafts have to be cut to adapt them into place. & Also seems the NP205 needs to be clocked up once.
....... But Over all I think I like the NP205 best.

205 is quite a bit larger than a D20...barely larger than an Atlas-we my Klunr V I front of them both, I am 1" shorter with the 205 than the Atlas.
