Post #9 ( I believe is the '73 +) shows out board of the battery a
Cold Air Intake Tube (the final assembly, attached to the rectangular hole in the core support).
I have seen inboard as well. At any rate many ripped this off - threw over their shoulder. The real proof ('in' or 'out board' of battery) would B the rectangular hole in the core support. Where are the guys finding that in '73, 4, 5, 6, and '77?
And can U sell me the caitube? aahahahaaaa

The plastic piece goes between the battery and the inner fender.
I have never seen anything factory installed that would go between the battery and the radiator...

They are for emissions, so if you already deleted the emissions, I would find a nice plug(s) that looks similar to the factory plug in Post #11...

This is a cool thread House. It's amazing how much the air cleaner assemblies changed through the years and almost still look the same. I'll post up a picture of the later '77 unit which is the same as you posted except the top was painted black instead of blue.

Does anyone know if a black air cleaner housing typically designates an oil bath filter? If so, does a blue housing typically denote a paper filter?

I would say the shape & yr are more of identifiers for most co's (inc ford) than color.

Yr:early 60s change over to paper filter.
Shape: more vertical oil bath (paper more horizontal or plate shaped).
HTH, lots more ta say.

Any more specificity on ur Q? The more specific (detailed) the Q the more offered in the answ...
Blue indicates mid 60s fords in alota ways (Corporate Blue is dark, another many of us use is lighter & this is the 1 I mean. The Corporate was in the 80's I believe). I have links to paint numbers, models and yrs but am not sure what U seek...

Deffinatly paper. The oil wuz, as U said black, but straight up'n dwn & over on driver's side.

Lotta stuff changed (as seen in ur pic for the AC Housing) inc altern, dizzy, brek MC, booster, radiator. The paper filter wuz covered w/bottom of the 'can' on the housing, a snorkle there, etc, etc...

What;s ur specific Q jm?

I have a 1970 bronco with a black air cleaner housing that has an oil bath filter. It seems like there are lots of variations amongst the years and even within the same year. I was just curious if that was one thing that stayed constant through the years--blue for paper and black for oil. My other questions about my specific air cleaner housing are in the above thread.

No, as 66-69 housings were all black, whether they were dry element or oil bath type.
Yours with a ribbed top and the nipple on the top corner for the valve cover breather
would point to a 1970 only style. The oddity of it being black could either be related to
it being super early and still the 1969 color, or a carryover for oil bath, not sure since
there isn’t a whole lot of info out there on them. I am considering it a one year only part
at this point. Thanks for the pics.

If anybody else has the “optional” oil bath air cleaner to help clarify,
please feel free to chime in...!

those 4 yrs have the circular not oval or kidney shaped like this and cross over the VC to drivers side, no?

I will not say it's OE.
It is a lill different, yet again. (but also nota bent8, isa 170).

Fun to follow history, supposition.
Only positive checks? the literature (shop manuals). Human memory is not adequate no matter what folks say (try a court of law sometimes).

I often use a SoCo retired Ford prts-man (over on FTE) 'numbers dumy'. He still has the microphish & books but is in poor health...have gotten a prt from his referrals (closed dwn dealers' others).

I just went over all the posts and pictures. I found couple things that need correction. First in post #11 is a photo of an obviously '77 engine bay. Not a '75 as claimed. I have saved that same photo from a Hemming's listing where it was described as a barn find '77. I guarantee as a '77 owner who bought his new and changed as little as I could. The top in that photo has the '77 top that tapers to the outboard edge but isn't concave like earlier years. All the '77s had 2 holes in the front one for a cold weather modulator and one for a catalyst protection sensor. Mine had the cold weather modulator and a rubber plug. The various DSOs called for different equipment. Post #29 claimed that late '77s had black air cleaners. My '77 was built in very late '77, and it's blue. The production '77s were blue, but replacement parts were black. I also want to point out that the long tops with ribs were a change made in 1970 to make room for automatic chokes.
