About to order rims and tires for the 72. Getting big at's 35x12.5x15. I'm leaning toward an 8" rim. What's the right backspace for4 wheel disc. FS Ford brakes up front. Caddy rear set up on full floater 77 bronco rear. Tie-rod over if it matters. All r corners are cut for flares.

I have 4.5" BS on 10 x 16 steel rims on my race bronco. Clears everything but you might consider 3.5 to make sure your front tires don't rub.

If you're going to wheel the Bronco and air down, go with 8 inch wide wheels.

Do they make a 9"wide. I'm in the process of making my 72 more street friendly. It's on 8s now. My 66 is on 10s. It feels more secure on the road but worried of what I'll lose off road with the 10s. Was mostly concerned of what backspace since I've never had to order rims

I ran 33x12.50s on 10s for years. Even wheeled them pretty hard as well. They do fine.

For the record, the "bulge" you hear about so much still is purely in the eye of the beholder. I personally think it looks better to have a narrower wheel than a wider one on Broncos in most situations. Not all of course and 10" wheels abound, but my go-to is an 8.
But again, that's personal preference.

The bulge is purely a look comparing the relative roundness of the sidewall. It's not actually bulging out any wider on the narrower wheel. It's just the sidewall is further outboard of the bead that give it that look.
In fact it should be approx. the same sidewall width on either wheel on a 15" due to extensive sidewall flex. Just looks bulging because the bead is tucked in tighter.
Might be different on different diameter wheels with shorter profile tires, but haven't physically tested those. Just 15's and 16's for the most part.

It still baffels me that tire manufacturers suggest a 10in wide wheel for a 12.50 tire. They do not look right. Or like any oem tire on a factory wheel. Now a 12.50 on an 8in wheel looks "normal" to me. I think most 15x8 are 3.5 back space which gives plenty of room up front with d44 stuff.

Sidewall doesn't buldge, it just comes in to the rim. If I had 10s the side wall would stick out more and make the tread appear narrower than the sidwalls

I am the opposite. I think the 10" looks perfect on an 12.50 tire. The 8" makes the tires look like a cartoonish balloon.

What's bad at the stretched tires. 10.50 tire on a 10" rim, that's bad.

Recently I needed tires for my dentside. The wheels I wanted were only available in 17x10 no other option. Was running a standard 265/75R16 and the diameter was good, 32". Started going through a lot of tire size guides. A 32" tire approved for a 10" rim was what I wanted. Trying to avoid the low profile look a 65 series tire was as low as I would go. A 285/65R17 is an approved tire for a 10" rim and fit my other size goals. I was worried about the stretched look. While the sidewalls are pretty much straight vertical, it isn't stretched. Gets a lot of compliments on the tire/wheel choice.

Had I to do again I would have had my wheels made with 8" rather than 10" for the race truck. Next time....

Agreed. What I wanted was 9" which was twice the BS but I had the choice of 8 or 10. I didn't know enough about race applications when I made the decision. A little more research would have informed my decision better.

@'bowser: Cartoonish balloon?! C'mon, that's a little harsh! :p

Both look fine IMHO and I like the fact that they do hold a bead better at low tire pressures.
