Quiet High Flow Mufflers, Do they exist?

Hello everyone,

I bought my EB about a year ago from a guy who used it as a toy. I'm not sure the model but essentially I have a 289 with headers, dual exhaust and the pipes come out of both sides just behind the tires. I would imagine this is incredibly loud and pretty obnoxious to my neighborhood. I don't daily drive it but still drive it 2-3 times per week so I'd love to have something much quieter but still not lose the power. Can anyone make any suggestions? I've been researching this but can come to any EB specific results.

Thank you,

Flowmaster Delta 50's.
Because they are the "Delta's" they have zero interior drone.

Almost too quiet.
No packing to blow out, they will likely outlive you.

Awesome any specific model i should buy?

Like Skyann said it won't matter, all the Delta 50's are the same sound, you just have to take a look at your present system and see what off set and pipe size you will need.

By the way the Delta 50 flows more than a regular Flowmaster and a regular Flowmaster flows more than straight pipe Because the Flowmaster chamber creates a vacuum that pulls the next exhaust pulse through.

Ran the 50s' on my '78 for almost 15 years. Great mufflers.

Does the system have a cross-over tube in it? That will kill off a fair amount of resonance all by itself.

I put a Walker Quiet Flow on a used truck that had a fart pipe installed, and it went back to bone stock sound! I plan to go with a Walker on my next build, I like it quiet.

Pick something with about your HP level that is quiet, look at mufflers that fit it and see if they fit. Get a stock replacement muffler. They are very affordable in most cases. I finally did this with my V8 Ranger. Ended up using a muffler off a V8 Durango (or maybe Dakota). Had enough flow for the engine but was quiet. I scoured the diminsions, inlets and offsets to find something that fit, ran that part number through Rock Auto website to find the application.

In general if you want high flow and quiet, you are looking at a physically large muffler.

After years of having a loud exhaust with a soft top, I went to a Hush Thrush, and I'll almost use nothing else. I had headers, 2 into 1 with a Magnaflow, and a 3 inch exit that made me have to use ear plugs on long trips. My kids love the loudness for all of five minutes, and then quickly look for something to cover their ears with.
The thing I found is almost any exhaust that is packed with fiberglass will be gentle on the ears, I do stress almost, as a small few that are packed are still a little too much. However, the HP loss is no joke when you pick the wrong muffler, as I can feel the difference in certain conditions compared to the old 2 in 1 system. In the end, I like to side with the youtube Hotrod Magazine videos; go bigger if you're concerned about restrictions, and learn to love the packing.

The Borla that I had was a packed muffler, so I'd vote against them too.

I've had this muffler on a couple trucks and really like it. Enough so that I have one for the Bronc-up when I get around to building it's new system. Quiet and no drone when cruising, but gets a bit louder when you stomp on it. Downside is for a 289-302 ci sized engine is that 3" tube is too big.

I have a 2:1 system and went with the Walker. It's a large muffler but tucks up nicely and doesn't drop down below the rear spring mount. It's designed as a factory replacement for GM BB. After talking with Walker and GM, it'll provide more than enough flow for any Ford motor you can squeeze into your engine compartment. It's too big in my opinion to run a dual exhaust with, and frankly you don't need to run dual because the flow rate is so high. You might want to read this:

If you want quiet, don't get caught up in the aftermarket name brand muffler stuff. All the Borla, Flowmaster, Magnaflow stuff is there to be loud. Just different types of loud. And most people associate loud with power (just look at the yelling in the presidential debates). But there are plenty of high flow OEM mufflers that work. You just can't claim that you have a (insert name of favorite exhaust company here) muffler on your ride.

That's the truth.
They have had the technological ability to make quiet vacuum cleaners since the 1960's, but no one will buy them.
People buy quads for hunting, then put a muffler on them that scares all the animals into the next county.
