Rust on wheel hub

Got rust on new front wheel hubs. Ideas how to prevent so you don’t see that when I put the new wheels on? Paint seems like it will scratch when wheels slide across it on install and removal.

POR-15 ? I painted mine rattle can black some 10 years ago. Like all rattle can paint...it's gone now. Was considering POR-15 if I take them back off in the future

How fancy is your bronco overall?
I used to paint mine with simple spray paint, and it would look great for a couple of years. Then I’d paint it again in a couple years and then again.
Did it quite a few times, but it always looked good.
You’re right that it can scratch, but other than being very careful when you install wheels, the tape idea is great.
I never thought of that, but probably would never have gone to the trouble because my bronco was a daily driver, and not fancy at all.
But I was still fairly careful when I installed the wheels and rarely scratched the paint.

Depending on what you’re after spray paint with a good primer will last for a while. But if you drag you wheel across it it will scratch off eventually. POR-15 will last longer than spray paint but will peel off if you didn’t prep right. If you want to leave it raw and not have it rust coat it in WD-40 or similar to protect it. You’ll have to reapply periodically but it won’t scratch. The best solution would be to either powder coat or Ceracoat them.

I use a connector for 3-1/2" ABS sewer pipe.
It will fit over hub wrapped with one layer of paper towel.
I keep meaning to grind the rib off the inside of connector, then I could use a rag instead of paper towel.
The connector fits inside center hole of my rims.
