Setting Timing with Vacuum Guage

I need help on the procedure of setting the timing with a vacuum guage. I understand you advance the timing until you get the highest vacuum and then retard it until you get one inch less. Is this correct? Also, do you unplug the vacuum advance when you do this? Which way is advance and which is retarded, clockwise/counter clockwise?

Thanks
Frank

You got the right idea. Here is a link Jeepster gave me when I had the same question.buicks.net

Not a ford thing, but good info. I think clockwise is advance, but it will be obvious when you start to play with it.
