Hi gurus,
Question for you all. Getting close on my frame off restoration but want to know what new speedometer cable gear I need. original gears were 4.11 in the rear and 3.?? in the front. I now have 4.58 gears and lockers front and rear and plan on running 38" tires. yes it has a 6" lift so 38's will fit. The current gear on the transmission side of the cable has 18 teeth. I am thinking I need fewer teeth on the gear, is that correct? Thanks Jerry

Here's a handy chart Viperwolf1 posted some years ago.

that is what I did and I have 18. I am assuming reading from the chart that is the number in the chart associated with the gear and tire size. The top of the chart say 6 or 7 what is that number?

That is the number of teeth on the gear inside the transfer case. That one that your old 18 tooth meshed into.

You had 6 or 7 tooth gear driving the 18 tooth gear. We just don't know if you had a 6 or 7 tooth in the transfer case. And since you started with a random mix of parts, the only way to really know is to count.

Paint pen and mark a tooth through the speedo hole. Turn the output and count the teeth.
