I hesitate to ask, new to me 73, out cleaning it up yesterday, put new plates etc. on it.

Decided I would make sure the transfer case worked after having my tranny rebuilt. Well, I got it into 4 HI and LO, but now when I shift it back into 2 HI, the transmission won't catch and the truck wont move. I can feel the differential shifter (J) engage in 2H, but the truck is basically in neutral for lack of better term.

When shifting the differential should I be in neutral or park? Any input on getting it back to 2 wheel drive would be great. Wife and dog had a good laugh as EB was stuck in middle of drive most of the afternoon.

Thank you in advance.

Try backing up a few feet, try shifting in neutral. I think from 2 hi to 4 hi and back it should be shift on the fly or at least you should not have to be in neutral. 4 low you should be stopped and in neutral.

Sounds like you have a C4. The thing with auto transmissions is the output shaft always wants to turn unless its in PARK. If the tcase is in gear the output shaft can only turn with the wheels. If the tcase is in neutral the output shaft will slowly build up speed up to the engine speed. That will make it difficult to engage the tcase unless you do it quickly (before the output shaft has time to start moving). It may be better to leave the trans in PARK while trying to get the tcase in gear. It would help if the Bronco was on an incline so you could let it roll very slowly while engaging the tcase.

The J shifters are notorious for wearing out and making shifting difficult. Twinstick shifters are much better.

Every once in a while mine will get difficult to shift - even with twin sticks. I have found that putting the tranny in N and shutting off the engine helps. If it's really bound tight, you may want to jack either the front or the rear (both tires) off the ground. This will eliminate any binding.

HeHe....You wanto to know stuck...Try having twin sticks and the front in high and the rear in low after rolling about 6 ft downhill!!!
Sounds like your shifter is worn. B4 twin sticks mine would do that(C4 auto). I had to push it forward and backward a few times for it to clank in gear.
