What do you all use to stop lite surface rust on raw metal bumper before painting with a rattle can?

Is it more than would simply wipe off with a solvent or Scotch-Brite pad?
If so, I've been getting lazy in my old age and just rattle-canning right over the light surface rust.

Now, to clear up that a bit, I only do that with a rust-converting primer and that seems to work well with so far never having any rust show up later.
In fact, the stuff I use currently is Rustoleum Rust Converting Primer because it supposedly has those good characteristics for stopping rust, but mainly because it's a fantastic paint!
It goes on smooth and even, does not run unless you really just put it on too heavy, dries quickly, and somehow manages to last a VERY LONG time even outdoors.

It's been good to me so far, so I highly recommend it if your surface is just showing "staining" rather than any kind of bubbling that would need to be taken down before painting.

Good luck.

I've used Ospho and it works great. The Rustoleum Paul mentioned has worked well for me too!

Cool, thanks for the heads-up. It's getting harder and harder to keep up with that guy!

I can't always blame him for my not being able to make it through each one. I usually click on YouTube at about 2am (when I should have been asleep for three or four hours already!) so am pretty bleary eyed without help from anyone.

Thanks for the feedback!

FYI- I used SEM - Rust Mort, rinse with water, dry, acetone, etching primer, and Hammerrite Direct to Rust (DTR) rattle can on my cage and front bumper eight years ago, and much to my surprise rust is showing up now!

I am prepping a new front bumper with very light rust, and based on this feedback I am thinking: media blasting, Ospho, rinse, Rustoleum Rust Converting Primer, then apply Rustoleum Rust Converting Paint.

I have had very good results with rustoleam rusty red primer and rustoleam gloss black over coat.
