Thinking about a 347

Folks, I may have the opportunity to build a new motor for my rig. I think I have a bad head gasket, but it's currently not a big problem. I'm working on getting into a gen 2 explorer with V8 and will end up with a motor to be rebuilt, so I'm wondering if I should make it a bigger motor, since I can't get a 351 under my hood. I don't have inner fenders so getting the heat out from under the hood is not a problem.

I'm working with P heads and explorer EFI, and I don't know the limitations of those stock heads vs cubes. Plus, I've read and been told that 347 engines tend to wear out relatively quickly, but it's possible there was a change made to the stroker kits that helps that??

So please fill me in on your experience with 347s or maybe even 331s. I'm more interested in hearing how long and hard you ran your stroker before it just had to be rebuilt.

I did this exact build, 99 Explorer 5.0 EFI with P heads. I used the Scat forged 347 assembly, Comp 35-349-8 cam, EFI guy did the harness, Damper Dudes for the balancer and I did the rest. Starts and runs strong, no issues other than the stock Explorer power steering pump is horrible. I don't have any worries or concerns about longevity.

Your kind of all over the place with this post.
347s are fine. As wellnas 351 based stroker. It depends on who builds them.
I had a 408. Which is a 351 based engine with a stroker kit. It lasted a year until it failed. However ever the trans caused it. I am running a 347 now and it runs great, not 498 great, but grr a t.
Bigger is better... 408 or 427 and you will never regret it.

Running P heads on my 351w. They will be fine on your 347. Arguably the best stock cast iron head ford has produced. You will have to upgrade the springs on the P heads if running anything bigger than the stock explorer cam.
