Transmission fluid in adapter between c4 and Dana 20 normal?

Is this normal for trans fluid to come into the stock ford adapter between the C4 and the Dana 20. This tranny is newly rebuilt and I struggled installing the transfer case and I know I need to replace my c4/ transfer case adapter gasket but I didn’t expect any oil in this section. Is this normal for fluid or a trans leak? Thanks in advance!

Also, is a gasket recommended or will RTV suffice?

There's a seal in the adapter that can go bad. If it does you get tranny fluid in the t-case. I parked on a slight hill every night. Sure enough when I checked fluids the t- case was over full and tranny fluid was low.

Yup...Double lipped double spring seal that separates the two fluids. The seal is not easily sources local anymore.
Current info I have from searching....Current seal info: Input shaft seal (double lip)-CR #517383,Napa #NOS 18676, CR #18676 (good seal) (Do not use Timken #473179)

I just ordered one well 2. The one that came with my D20 rebuild kit was the correct seal. Double lipped double spring. The single seal I ordered from one of the vendors was the Timken (not double spring) I suggest calling before ordering to make sure you get the correct double lip double spring

Thank you for your responses. I likely need to replace the T-case seals too, but I don’t have fluid leaking into the tranfer case, yet…but rather fluid in the section that I refer to as the “adapter” which contains the male transmission shaft inputting into the female T-case or the section between the trans and T-case. Should trans fluid be in this section? The gasket in the link below is where my leak is and should resolve it. I just didn’t except fluid in this section?

If I remember right the single lip seal is the correct stock replacement. Someone later discovered the double lip seal that works better and lasts longer. Last time I needed one wh had the double lip seal on the shelf .

I know this is an old thread but I was getting trans fluid in t case with tranny requiring fluid. I have the t case off & the adapter off which is where I thought the doll lip seal would be and noe looking at the governor. Haven’t found the double lip seal yet. 73 c4 351. Thanks for any help.

I’m not familiar with this “double lip seal”. I know there’s a standard seal at the torque converter (front of trans). The governor and lower section of the trans case (rear) is open to the intermediate housing.

The t-case seals are in the bearing housing: 1 is at the bearing; 2nd is an o-ring(??) around the bearing housing.

This is from memory so please feel free to correct if I misspoke.

Adding pics from wildhorses site. These will help.

P/n 8524 should be the “double lip seal”. Replace the o-ring(s?) and bearing while you have it apart.

Did you separate the adapter from the Transfercase t, the stub shaft comes out of adapter housing from that side , be mindful there are13 roller bearings that may or may not stay in place hat between the stub shaft and tc input shaft no biggie but be aware

Yes, adapter is off. Adapter is just empty case, nothing in it. Is the dbl lip seal be hind governor on back of c4? Thanks

It's been forever but from what I remember it slipped in the intermediate housing from the rear. The stock seal was a single lip but someone found a double lip that outlasts the original seal.

So maybe stub shift and bring return still stuck on TC , what jeffnic posted should either be still in adapt or housing or still attached to tc sometime some use use RTV so pictures would tell a lot on how it came aoart
