Does anyone know what this wire/plug (circled in blue) does??? My rig is a 1972 Sport 302 with manual trans, manual steering and manual brakes. Coincidentally the truck runs just great without it being hooked up. I believe that I have seen the same plug in pics of other Broncos so I assume that it is original. Thanks.

"Carb anti-desieling solenoid"
Pardon my ignorance, but what is that and what does it do? How do I hook it up?

Thanks for the quick reply Viperwolf1

The wire is 12V in the RUN position only of the ignition switch. On the stock carb the solenoid held the throttle open just enough to give a good idle speed. When the key was turned OFF the solenoid closed the throttle completely, eliminating the possibility of desieling. Good wire to keep hanging around for potential future uses.

what is "desieling"?
I believe that I have the original carb and it does not have any solenoid with a plug anywhere. Could the vehicle have come from the factory with the carb anti-dieeseling plug on the firewall without having it attached to the carb?

Thanks again!

Yes it could have. The wiring harness was made with all the bells and whistles. Easier to make one type of harness and install it in all regardless of the options/requirements on particular trucks.

Also called "run-on", it's when you turn the key off and the engine keeps running. Usually only for a few revolutions and it's rough and almost coughing. Though sometimes, in extreme cases, it can continue for quite a while.

With an old tire engine (and an exhaust system you don't necessarily want to keep anymore), you can sometimes mimic this by holding the throttle open a bit when you turn the key off. Often it'll not only run on, but you'll get some nice popping and funny noises and, if you're really unlucky, and decide to turn the key back on, you might just end up with a loud bang and a distorted muffler!

One of those "don't try this at home" kind of things that teenagers just can't resist sometimes. ;D

Did they all have this wire? I don't recall seeing that anywhere or a carb with a solenoid, but then again, I haven't been looking for it.

It may not have been there in the early years but I've seen it on '72 and up.

I use it for my electric choke connection on my Carter carb. Seems to work better than the original Stator connection from the Alternator for some reason.

The anti diesel solonoid was used on California trucks when they added the dual canister vacuum advance and set back the timing chains. Ford added all kinds of BS to meet California standards in the early days. They made California trucks and 49 state federal emissions trucks. Mostly effect 72 through 75 trucks and in 76 and 77 they all became 50 state trucks. They used the same wiring harnesses for the same year just didnt plug stuff in.

I have seen the wire on my 72 or 73 but I'd never seen the solenoid. Good to know. Now back when I had my parts store seems like 84 or so Buick had a solenoid . it worked for the AC compressor. When you turned on the compressor it kicked in an lifted the RPM up a couple hundred RPM's. It was adjustable so you could choose your idle rpm . Neat item. So when you killed your truck it'd drop to 0 and the truck died faster. Eliminating dieseling.

I can verify that it goes back to at least '71.5 then. Forget what month mine is, but it's got the Dana 44 and the fuse block in the glove box. Non-CA truck too. Originally sold in Montana. Or at least the first owner was a Montana hunting ranch. It could have been bought in CA. Think it has a code for Fremont in the VIN, but it's been awhile since I looked.

And I bet more were removed by PO's than you can imagine. Not just on Fords, but anything that was owned by a "tinkerer", or was serviced by an old-timer that didn't like extra stuff to screw with. Saw more than my fair share of them go straight into the garbage just because they were some of that "un-necessary crap" that nobody wanted to bother to take the time to adjust, or to even understand.

The best thing for that Solonoid is to put a switch on it and raise it to 1500 RPM and when you need to run your offroad converted air compressor you flip the switch raise the idle and you fill your tires lickity split. Especially since half the people you wheel with wont rig up some kind of air system for refilling tires.

those wires plug into a dashpot that is mounted on the carb in front of your throtle linkage....when on it keeps your engine idle at the proper rpm......when you turn the key off the unit backs off the idle so that the engine doesn't continue to receive gas from fords crappy carbs that seem to have post nasel drip.
when i changed my engine I got rid of the whole set up. If you still want to hook it up as original I will look through my old parts and see if I sill have it.
