Guess the threads been hijacked.:D 71 D44 k34101 sep 70 build.

front LS codes are usually on the VIN tag last letter in the axle code. before 73 either N or J usually denoted a front LS. from 73 the J was for power steering. Not sure if they still had a code for the front LS after that. I think I've heard of Q being a code as well but not positive on that.

That's ok, it can be a dual-purpose game.

After '72 the PS code was "J" like you said. The limited slip code was "8". "Q" was the code when both PS and limited slip was installed.

Got a buddy with a late-build '72. I'll have to find out when it was made and get a number off of his T-case too.

I've noticed that '72 was one of those "late years" where Ford ran the model year '72 right up into October. So, depending on who was doing the paperwork at the time(?)

Thats what I have been told as well. My 72 is a P50058, June build, but it has the driver front wheel well, core support & radiator for a 73. They put the PS on 73 & up and changed those three items to accommodate the PS box.

The last factory T-shift should be a '73 around VIN #Q80000. Who has the closest VINs with T and J shifters?

Viper,

I'm a little confused. My 73 has a J-shift and is S 45616. I think that is June. Shouldn't mine have a T-shift?
I am the first registered owner. Mine was a Jacksonville Electric Authority vehicle used only for service at remote power line poles. My Dad and I knew the JEA rep. that drove it the entire eight years. We got the full service history in a big file when we purchased it at the city auction. There hasn't been a transfer case swap from what we can see or research. Again with my build date shouldn't mine be a T-Shift?

Everything I've seen says the T's were prior to Q80000. J's came after that. The alpha characters were mostly in order (Q before S) so I would expect yours to have a J. I don't know what your build date is but it looks like Jul or Aug '73?

The D44 was supposedly started with K20001.

That sounds right. The old Ford ad I have says Dana 44s became standard on Sept. 27, 1970, and the build code K20000 started Oct. 1 according to the books I have.

I have 1973 Q28379 with a T shift (not exactly in the running for the "last" T shift).

But I also have 1971 K22075 with (what I am pretty sure is) a D44. That puts me pretty close to the "first" D44, I think.
