ZF or M5OD

I'm running the later m5r2 behind a torquey 347. The ratings on the NV and the M5 are similar/ close. The selling point to me on the M5 was the bellhousing was sbf and clutch part numbers were stock ford truck and late truck starter. Same zf adapter and BC makes hydro clutch kit or you can piece it together yourself. Mine has been on the road for over 3000 miles and close to a year now and I do not baby it. I don't outright abuse either.. well maybe one or twice.

I remember reading that the NV3550 is rated at 300 ft. lbs. for 7200 gvwr.

Does that mean it will take more torque in our light eb's?

Not really. Torque is torque, and that's what breaks manual trannies. The only way light weight helps the trans is if you spin tires before getting above 300 lb-ft or if you just don't use the torque because you don't need to.

Yep, saw and heard that too! Borderline abusive I'd say!;D

I run the M5OD in mine too. Street friendly and still decent on the trails. I'm not real easy on it either. Just ask Dave^^%)

It wasn't abusive!!! I only eased into throttle 3/4 of the way in 1st before hitting 6200 rev limit and let up in between the 1-2 shift while easing out the clutch to not break the tires loose. How did that stock looking 302 sound at 6 grand??

The point is if you don't constantly dump the clutch hard from a stop light or on the trail in 4 low and power shift like it's a drag car the trans will live. Art and I agree a high rpm powershift is not possible/recomended with the M5 or a ZF, they will fight you and you will do damage. If you want a sports car buy a sports car.

Also with the abuse I would expect to break a D20 output or 28 spline axle/pinion before the trans. As for the torque of the 347 I was able to lope up the A side hill of twin grove in 2nd gear at 1100 RPM with no shuddering/bucking. All my torque is in by 2500 to 2700 rpm and it should be close to or above 400 ft# based on the combo.

M5. I have mine behind a 5.0 with 3.56 gears. With your 4.10 5th will be very usable. You can also save some money by finding a 205 transfer case as it bolts up and you don't need the adapters. Your will need to make or have made your drive shafts. I really like the M5
So with the M5 and NP205 do you have to trim the shaft length for it to bolt up properly? I am doing the same swap.

i believe the M5 has the shifter farther back than the zf. so its better position in the tunnel and closer to the driver. better clearance of shifter to the dash

Yes. I trimmed mine 1/4-3/8” I believe. I just cut it with a cutoff wheel on my grinder. Also had to machine “grind” the housing just a bit for the shifter rods to have enough clearance.

There are actually 3 shifter positions with the M5. I had the mid position and found one on eBay that is farthest back and replaced it. I had to add some clearance for the shifter forks but has been working for 5 years now. Great trans. Also changed my gears to 4:11. World of difference in 5th. Very happy.

I like the ZF but can't comment on the M5 since I haven't driven one. The ZF shifts like a truck but I'm ok with that. The roll over noise is a little annoying but you get used to it and with a moderately loud exhaust you won't hear it lol. Granny low is nice to have and I love the hydraulic clutch, the pedal is about as light as the one in my wife's 22 Bronco. I opted to run an NP205 instead of the Dana 20, doesn't need the adapter if you go that route.
