I need a good used 250 inline six. (The difference is where the starter mounts.)
The engine in my Bronco that grenaded is engine code

D5DE
6015-AA
I need one with the same code.

Is that a 200? It should still be a high mount starter in 75. How many bolts hold on the water pump?

Other than the external clues mentioned, how do you tell for sure what one of these six cylinders is?
Engineering number? Casting date? Crankshaft code? Bore diameter I assume? But of course that’s more work. What about the type of cylinder head?

The only distinguishing feature of the 250 that I know of is that it uses the small block bell-housing. The 200's and smaller use a bell that is unique to them. I'm dimly recalling that there maybe some exceptions to this?

200 has a 3 bolt water pump, 250 has 4 bolts
200 uses unique bellhousing patterns, 250 is SBF

200 did do a low mount starter but it wasn’t until 1980 and they were called big bell 200s. Even those had to be modified to fit other transmissions if it wasn’t a c5 if I remember correctly.

I also attached a picture of a high mount starter 200, you can see where the starter would sit.

As I recall from way back when a friend had a hot-rodded 200 in his 64.5 Mustang Coupe the 144's, 170's, and 200's all shared that "Small Block Six Cylinder" bell-housing.

OP, what is wrong with the engine that you have? It is the surest bet to fit back into the truck.

The 250 block is different from the 144-200 being slightly wider and taller and has the SBF bell housing as stated. Ford made a few different block designs in the 144-200 to help make things more confusing. The 240/300 is larger than the 250.

Confirmed broken camshaft is why I want to replace it. The link to Ford six in the above comment is making me question my assumption to it being a 200. According to that chart, Ford didn’t make a 200 in 1975.
Update: it’s a 250 ci

boy, did I typo that or what?

thom, way over on the Lower Left Coast. Bound to be someone(s) in your area who knows of a shop that can work with you on getting that engine sorted out and fixed.
