I just bought a set of Johnson lifters for my Godzilla a few weeks ago. Some of the Godzillas were having similar lifter problems around 40K miles (some less), especially the 2020-2022 engines. Some attributed the problem to manufacturing quality, especially post-COVID. Others said it was due to low oil pressure at idle.

Either way I addressed both possibilities in my engine. The Johnson lifters are top of the line, made in the USA. All the serious Godzilla builds use them.

Roller and flat taped issues both? When did these officially start? I know we’ve been talking about it for a few years now, but curious if there is a known date when certain brands started going downhill.
I have some older cam kits from Comp Cams, and an even older one from Crane that I haven’t installed yet. Two flat tappet, and one roller.
Wondering if I should just update them ahead of time.
Hate to have wasted the money, but I’d rather them, than waste an engine.

FMS roller lifter issues were back about 15 yrs ago as I had 3 of them let loose on my 418. Lasted about 6 yrs is all.

Spec'd out a 454 Dart block for a local buddy and he had a reputable shop assemble it.

Roller died in 100 miles-17 yrs ago

Had to rehone 2 cylinders.

Still running the engine-healthy horse for sure! We can hear piston slap from the rehone till it warms up.

Remember, brand new Chev engines are having all kinds of lifter issues on their V8's with their fancy - on/off lifters. :)

Me, 17 years ago, roller lifter, not in my Bronco. Eaton clone of a GM lifter. Bore was full of manufacturing debris.

Did a little browsing earlier and someone had posted about checking a lifter or can with a file. Supposedly the file shouldn’t affect them as iit’s Rockwell C is lower than the hardened surfaces. I have my doubts about how accurate this would be…..but maybe there are heat treat problems out there?

Those Isky helix lifters look interesting. Supposed to last 5 times longer.

On an interesting side note …saw this when reading ared77’s gasoline post.

I wonder if by “five times longer“ they mean it lasts five weeks instead of one?
Sure, hope not!

^^^this. A roller lifter should roll on the lobe with 3 in 1 oil. That lifter has probably been eating itself practically since it was installed. Does the remains of the roller spin freely? Can you see what the cam lobe looks like? Not that I expect it to look shiny new.
Forgot to answer this Lars-yes, the roller rotates freely. Definitely not the needles but the actual face of the roller itself (or cam lobe).

Sorry to hear, what a mess. I avoided the FMS lifter problem awhile back, switched to Johnson, Jesel and Comp.

For awhile, even big block Chevys didn’t get enough splash.
It was an unfortunately well-known failure prone version, either GEN III or GEN IV if I remember, that was wiping cams, even back in the day of zinc in the oil and before roller cams became much of a thing.

Those are known to die if you idle too much. Not the fancy ones either, just regular rollers. Prevailing theory is there isn't enough splash oil at idle. Way to go Dodge, splash oil lubed lifters.
they are saying same thing about jeeps 3.6 v6, company says its made to rev, thats how top end oils, they do not understand why people are not hitting 5,500rpm more often.

So i do.

So if I hear all you guys clearly, you're telling me & everybody else that I should be buzzing to 6K rpm repeatedly while going to town for groceries, bolts, irrigation supplies right??

I want to qualify... (couple yrs old)
I was out testing led headlight patterns one night (wow, there sure are some terrible led beam patterns but bright on the garage door from 20ft away lights) when I walked around the back and the "poof" - "poof" of the exhaust condensation caught my eye then the exhaust note... kinda fun
