Is it a stock shifter? I would take the shifter off and see if you can manually shift into 2 hi. My shifter was awful and twin sticking it was the best thing I did to that point...

Twin sticks is a good, cheap upgrade. Hydroboost is an excellent mod for safety. Fuel injection (contact efiguy) is another. lockers front and rear if going off pavement. Thats a couple off the top of my head... :)
