Given how hard parts are to find and the drastic price increases I am not surprised. If your looking for a 4R70W, I have one that has been built/modified/custom lockup toque converter/Baumann controller for almost half that price.

It’s funny, when you live long enough and see prices change, both naturally and sometimes extremely, and just adding a new part to a vehicle costs more than the vehicle cost originally.
In this case, almost double!

Putting new windows in my house cost more than the house originally cost!

I'll just say that is way overpriced.
Find a local transmission shop that has a good reputation on what a walk in will cost. Add up the parts.

about 2k for a rebuild with the guy I use. Core can be had for about 150.00. Then you have to adapt to Dana or start with a awd and use a np205. BE controller is about 600 ish? So you are north of 3k if you hire it out. There are other options to save money, but it will take a little bit of research.

Yowza. I got a known good 1998 Explorer 5.0 AWD 4R70W for the princely sum of $250. Have an Atlas II on order for about $3500. Will eventually order a USSHIFT controller, for $600-800 as fordguy mentioned. Will need a shifter, a bunch of transmission cooler bits and driveshafts. A mystery crossmember that no one one on this forum seems to be able to identify for a 4R70W transmission + Atlas, will probably make it myself. Utilizing University of Utube, I plan to rebuild the transmission myself. Guessing I'll be into the job for less than half that.

I just did mine, by the time you buy advance adapter, shifter, Controller, shifter cable, trans mount, transmission, and rebuild to change output shaft, you will be at about 4500,with no labor.

They don't list prices on the web site, but I wonder what Hughes transmission charges https://www.hughesperformance.com/hd-tow-conv/
That is at least a well known name behind it.

I'm still with a good used salvage yard take out and not even open it up beyond doing a service to the pan.
Spareparts (username) on here has been running and I think beating hard on a 4r70w tranny he scrounged locally for like 200 bucks! I don't think you need to get carried away with the going with a super rebuild to get them to last. I paid 500 for mine from a member here and its been fine. I sold another for 300.00 that was pulled out of a running vehicle and it's been fine too. I am not saying don't rebuild if it gives you peace of mind but I don't think you need to overspend or crazy either.

Looks like I found it. Hughes wants about $6k for there package. Which is way too much.

$9k for the OPs find is insane. Doesn't even have a good cooler in it.

Anyone read the whole link? Why will the conversion only work in 67-77 Broncos? Why not a '66?

Ad states "Converting from a 2 or 3-speed to the 4r70w Transmission may also increase the value of your vehicle..." What the hell is a two speed transmission in a Bronco?

Riddled with errors and overpriced.

Sounds like they used the same line from the GM line where someone might be coming from a powerglide or turbo350 to a 700R4. They just swapped the 700R4 for 4R70W. Sloppy editing. Can pretty much guarantee that isn't the only thing that is sloppy.

I'm really not impressed with the transmission cooler. That is a pretty low grade cooler, there are a lot better coolers out there. Looks like that was picked based on price and its big, not what is now used for good cooling. Stacked plate coolers have been known for decades as a better cooler design.

I was looking at the pictures a little more and saw a Gearstar sticker on top of the transmission. Went and looked up that transmission. $5k straight from Gearstar. Now add in a controller and have them install the transfer case adaptor. Still nowhere close to the $9k they are asking for.

The block plate looks like a universal one, adapts to any of the Ford automatics. As presented, it is setup for the small 157 tooth flexplate, not the 164 of the 4R70W. There is a breakout tab to make it fit. Here is the thing about Ford block plates. It is what indexes the starter the correct location away from the crankshaft for proper starter depth. Those little break off tabs are in the area where the starter indexes. You will never have a really good starter alignment with that block plate. If you were real good and carefully filed down all the break tabs, it might get fairly decent. I would never use it.

And the hilarity of claiming increased fuel economy of 30-40%. That is a downright criminal worthy lie.
