Was planning to upgrade from C4 to 4r70w but the gear ratios of the 6r80 are grabbing my attention.

Who has put a 6r80 behing a 302 SB and mated to the D20? Interented in the overall finished length from bell engine block to D20. How much did rear driveshaft need to be shortened and how is the DS angle?

Doe the 6R have the same bolt pattern as small block or is it mod motor? Not sure myself but that may help decide... ?

The 6R was never put behind a SBF so unless you can find one from a truck with a 4.2L V6 (I do not know if trucks with that combo were made) you are going to need an adapter.

Might look at the gm version of the 6-speed. Shared engineering but you can probably find a gm trans to ford adapter cheaper.

I'm finishing up a Coyote/4R70W build now. I've been working on this project for about 3 years - and, so I was committed to the 4R70 by the time the 6R80 controllers and adapters hit mainstream. I have talked to some folks who have done the 6R80/Coyote combo and they are still trying to work out the kinks with the controller/shifting/etc.

certainly interested myself. However, the prices of the adapters and controller blow me away and we haven't even talked about sourcing the transmission itself.

One question. How does it compare to the C4 in length? seems like its gonna be a good 3-4 inches longer. or more?

I'm hoping for a better adaptor to the dana 20. AA doesn't have a shifter figured out yet. I know Toms just came out with a twin stick but no pic yet...Its a little early and most coyote guys can easily adapt to an Atlas 2. The PA bellhousing adaptor is 1/2" and AA says about 3 1/2 longer than stock c4...put both together and its about 4"? unless someone has better numbers?? mustang guys have really got into the 2wd version to sbf lately. Just blew up my c4 but had it rebuilt...If it goes out again I'm doing it.

thanks
John

I'm hoping LOTS of people will start doing this conversion - to hopefully increase production and competition which in-turn will hopefully bring prices down a bit and allow for kinks to be worked out. Hopefully won't work opposite where supply can't meet demand and prices stay up. Maybe the mustang guys will get all the controller issues sorted out.

Weight may be a factor for some too.
trans weight for kicks:
stock 3 sp weighs just under 100lbs;
C4 weighs close to 130 lbs?
C6: 175lbs;
NV3550: 100lbs;
NP435 close to 125lbs;
4r70w around 150lbs;
ZF5: 175 lbs
NV4500: 195 lbs;
6R80 is around 215 lbs.

For this application, prices won't come down because of popularity. If anything they'll go up because of popularity.

From all I have been hearing here and from others, the finished length of the 6r and 4r would be about an inch difference. There are adapters to mate the 6r to a SBF as stated. Plus would be an easier install of a Coyote in the future.

6r's can be found on eBay for $1500 or less depending on mileage. I've seen several with 40k to 50k for under $1200. Need to make sure if is a 2011 or later model 6r. Anything prior to that had internal shift control that prevents use of external controller.

Been looking at floor shifters for 2011 and up F150s. It should have everything to handle up/down shifting as well and lockups. Would be helpful if anyone with an F150 in those years could verify. Also, is it a cable operated?

Jason at BC is working on a mockup now for a 6r with SBF. Told me to call later in the week and he would have more accurate measurements and items of concern to focus on for the install.

Boss, you ever measure the length of you 4r from bell housing to front mounting surface of the D20? How much did you need to shorten your rear driveshaft?

I know the crossmember moved back about an inch and a half. I don’t recall about the shaft. I have swapped two shafts in the last few years because the one it had was a non cv type and the case had a cv yoke. I didn’t know this until I had been running a new one for a while.

How is the angle of your driveshafts? Longer should help front but could hurt rear. How much lift are you running?

3.5 lift. Angle is not bad...yet. I intend to put a Cold Duck in it so the angle is most certainly gonna get much worse. The front shaft definitely had to be lengthened and needs more now because of the lift.

There's a setup post in the classifieds...but you'll have to swap to a coyote to use it! ;D
