Allison 545...but if you want one that will go in a Bronco, probably a Baumann Engineering E4OD.

I've been running an AOD for about 7 years but if I was to do it again and money was not an issue I'd go with 700R4 much lower 1st and a better O.D. for the larger size tires we like to run. Later, Francois.

I would like to get an AOD, but I must admit that the C4 is pretty reliable and quite buildable. Rebuilding a C4 yourself is quite easy and allows for modifcation

I agree on the C4 . I can get them rebuilt for 400 bucks . They can withstand alot of abuse and they aren't very big .

ya c4 is good on a budget, but if money isnt an issue i think its gonna be tough to beat a 700R4, low first gear plus an overdrive. That would be, with out a doubt, my choice.

700R4 for sure! Great OD gear like everyone else has said. Or if you want brute strength go with a Turbo 350. One of the strongest tranies GM ever built (if they're built right that is).

700R4, C6, C4, and E40OD are supposed to be good. Read the transmission section here:<br><br>http://classicbroncos.com/webmap/Transmission/<br><br>and use that as a good guideline. For simplicity and ease, I think that it would be sweet to build up a badass C4 and throw in one of those overdrive units behind it. I saw it on Trucks, and it was like having a 6 speed auto, because each "real" gear had a high and low. Good luck either way. Also, remember that the torque converter can be a way to get a "lower" first gear per se. So if a 3:1 seems too high, remember that a good torque converter setup can effectively lower that through the stall.

Does it have to be a Ford trany? Is a low first gear important? Is overdrive important? Do you want machanical or electronically controled unit? What kind of horsepower does your endine make? To me the BEST auto tranny for a Bronco would be a FORD tranny.<br><br>I like the C4 since they bolt up easy and are strong enough for most people and are relatively inexpensive to get fixed.<br>

AOD-E baby!!!!<br><br>Lowest first gear in any Ford auto-2.84 (granted the 700R-4 is 3.01, but you have to get adaptors at both ends to make one work-all for .17 of gearing?)<br><br>OD is cool.<br><br>Equally as strong as any comparatively built 700R-4, C4, or Turbo350.<br><br>It fits-the C6, E4OD, and Turbo400's are all cool-but they are HUGE and rob horsepower/torque.<br><br>The electronic AOD with a Baumann computer lets you pick shift ponts on the fly, plus the electronic and non-electronic AOD can be wired so the TQ lockup comes on in first-this means heat free wheeling with an auto (the one main drawback in the past with wheeling an auto)!!!<br><br>My picks would be an AOD-E or a 700R-4 if you absolutely had to (but only in an extreme case ;D)<br><br>Oh yeah-my Group plug-<br>Yahoo! They are tough reliable little units and can be built to hold up to all kinds of different torques & horsepowers. You don't have to modify very much and can use mostly factory parts to install them.<br><br>If you need overdrive then a 1989 AOD with 4R70 or AODEW (wide ratio gear set). This trans is not dependant on electronic controls and is locked up mechanically in 3rd and 4th gear, hence the torque converter is working, mutiplying torque in the gears where you need it 1st and 2nd.<br><br>For simplicity and reliability for the long haul, I favor these two for the early Bronco.<br><br>BH
