Yeah, I'm curious too. I almost bought a used NV for 450 thru my work contacts today, but am waiting to hear back on the year. Now I may go this route as I too am not in a hurry. But with gas prices what they are, I bet many of us will be going with an OD tranny at some point or other for our DD.

what's nice is it looks like you wouldn't have to grind the notch in the bellhousing for that tranny. that was a major pain in the arse!!! tell ya right now you're gonna have to cut off that casting on the tail housing that mounts the jeep t-case shifter. it'll interfere with the shifter adapter that comes from AA.

I guessing that the same casting was an issue with the NV3550? Was that modification easier than the one on the bell housing? Just trying to get all the info I can.

Anyone in Utah, Southern Idaho or Southwest Wyoming have a NV3550 installed? Would like to take a look at the adapters. I have an easier time visualizing stuff when I can touch it.

Got a call back. He has been working on this but admitted that he is not even close to being done.

He stated that the clutch set up is different on the two trannies which is why there are two different parts from AA. One for the AX to a SBF and one for the NV to a SBF. Assures me that the rear is identicle in every way and that the NV to Dana 20 adapter will fit. His thought was that it would be easier to put a 231 behind it with a slip yolk eliminator and that would be a better set up but I need to keep the Dana for my winch. Not sure if the crossmember for the NV will bolt up exactly but shouldn't need much mods if any.

He states that the physical dimensions are identical between the two. Also said that hes never heard of an integrated bell housing on the AX15.

He has my e-mail and will keep me posted.

I've been keeping an eye out for a 3550 too. I don't think replacement parts will ever be an issue for them. Look at all the aftermarket support for J**ps , or Mustangs or Broncos for that matter. Actually , ask a tranny shop who makes their parts when they have to rebuild a 3550 , bet they're not all NV parts. (I think I may look into that now , should be a good source for info)
If that tranny had come from some obscure vehicle , then yes , parts might be an issue some day.

My buddy Stan just put a 3550 in his, so far so good. I am looking forward to driving it and comparing it to a ZF. I drove Bronko69er's zf and it was a blast. I think a 3550 would be more fun but for me the zf with the low first will be a big plus for wheeling.

Nothing new as of yet. Did get an e-mail last week stating that he (Rockland) is still working on the comparison and will get something to me as soon as he can.

I know there is likely a lot of detail to go through but it appears to be taking him a while to get this all together. Send him the link to this thread and it might help him understand that the market is possibly bigger than you.

I drove Donsbolt NV3500 and it was real nice. That is likely the way I will go. Taking a Jeep case and putting Toyota internals is just one more piece of confusion to add to a long list of things to remember when it does become time to buy parts!

What size tires are you planning on running on this DD?

I'd say go with the C4 and a mod shift kit for easy driving.

I'll admit that I love shifting through a manual trans, It's just plain out FUN!
but for a turnkey and go type of rig, Can't beat having a modified C4 in there.....

I will be running 30 or 31's. Keeping it uncut, mild lift.

My brain says go auto but my heart won't let me. The vision I have in my head always shows me shifting through the gears.

I will get to the bottom of this 5 speed issue sooner or later though. I am no where near needing the trans yet so I can afford to wait.

Thanks for the input guys.

I havn't heard from this guys in a while. I haven't tried much though, been pretty busy with other things lately. I'm still on the case though.

Any updates Ztoolman44?

I am still plugging away at mine. I have been on vacation for a few weeks down in the Keys fishing, so not a ton of progress on mine yet.
