After you pull the coil wire, unhook the battery. Just because the engine stops doesn't mean things are actually turned off. It will be like leaving the key in run. Can burn out points, coil, ignition module if left on and not running. Will also suck the battery down.

Then it is probably a bad ignition switch that needs replacment (not the lock cylinder, the switch the cylinder turns)

Any more info you could provide might halp as well.
Have you done any electrical work on it recently? Replaced an alternator or ignition system by any chance? Starter relay? Anything else done recently?

I don't understand how the starter solenoid could cause the problem. Maybe you have some stray current attached to the brown resistor bypass wire on the "I" terminal. If the solenoid was hanging the starter would be constantly running.

The "I" wire is on the contactor plate. This isolates the "I" unless the solenoid is engaged.
If the contactor hangs (welds) on the battery side or the wire breaks loose and reaches the battery side it could force 12V to the "I" without spinning the starter.

Wow! I never knew that! I thought for sure it would be the ignition switch; I've only changed starter solenoids when the starter doesn't disengage! Thanks for the tip!
