Slow motion tailgate strip and repaint

BTW, did you paint the entire grill green, then layer over the white, or the reverse? or just paint them separately?

For the grille he painted the white first, then taped that off and painted the rest green, then removed the tape and cleared the whole thing.

The tailgate was done the reverse way. Paint it all green, then tape it off and spray the white, then remove tape and clear it all.

Not sure if this is the best way or not, just know that's how he decided to do it!
Also note that he did them both knowing that once it's all assembled and painted it might need to be blended in.

Say Boss, if I park my truck in there, you think you could go ahead and get stripping the paint on it as well LOL.

Wheelhorse - here's my advice....take the body off the frame, put it on a rotisserie, have it blasted and painted! No joke, the way I'm doing it is the wrong way to do things.... it took forever to strip the thing by hand, and there are a few areas I couldn't get into...the very edges of the windshield, the lip on the windshield, the inside of the tub around the tailgate, etc.

The Bronco received one coat of etch primer, then a coat of regular primer. Took it out of the booth this morning and started block sanding. About 12 man hours today block sanding and glazing and block sanding and glazing. Had to hit the driver rocker with filler, but everywhere else was good with glaze. I think we've got it looking pretty good!

At the end of the day started to tape it back up and will get another coat of primer. Will then block it off again, make any small corrections and with any luck be ready for actual paint. Hoping to do this tomorrow and Wednesday before leaving for Gore, so that he can paint it on Thursday, and so that we don't have to tear off all the tape/masking/plastic and move it out of the booth again.

BEN Welcome to the site...And Welcome to the Addiction.....I have to say you are starting out in pretty good fashion....With a Texas Truck and all. The first thing you are going to need is a bigger Garage.....You are dreaming if that little thing will fit all the Parts along with your current broncos new realitive, or it's clone. Don't ya love that Colum Shifter.....I do....I Did! !!.. They remind me Of an old Nash...Or some Antique Automobile from back back in Time...When White walls were big..

Alright Ben,

Where are the updated paint pictures? Hope you haven't ran into problems as you seem to get things done pretty steady.

Thanks for the compliments guys. In case you didn't know, these things don't exactly block sand themselves!

We got the inside of the windshield frame painted and the windshield back up and taped off. Final bodywork was done yesterday and seam sealer applied. Was going to tape it up yesterday afternoon and put it in the booth for color this morning but got displaced by some higher paying insurance jobs!

Current plan is to move it into the booth Thursday morning tape it up and make the magic happen!

If the picture below of the beautifully applied seam sealer to the driver side door jam doesn't make your heart flutter at least a little bit, you should probably unsubscribe from this thread. :)

Looking good there! Make sure you have a suit and respirator Thursday, there's nothing like being in the booth and watching it go from primer to beautiful. Can't wait to see it! Did mine just like you are doing, sprayed the first coat (single stage) and had several runs. Thought I would loose my mind! Finished the doors, windshield and tailgate that day and returned the next morning to wet sand the entire Bronco and start over. By the end of the day we had 2 coats of paint and 2 coats of clear on it. (it was a long day).

It sounds like your painter has hired himself a good helper/sucker to do all the grunt work.
Did you apply the seam sealer? You seem a bit proud of it. :D

Funny enough, I actually did the passenger side door seam sealer. He (the painter, aka the guy who actually knows what he is doing) did the driver side. He did it in about 5'. I did my side in about 30'. They both look really good, if I do say so myself! :)

Also, I think he is having a good bit of fun with my project, mainly because as you say I am doing all of the grunt work. In addition I've tried to do my best to help out around the shop, sweeping up and emptying all the trash cans and trying to be helpful. That may remind you of a few months ago back at your place....I saw how quickly and skillfully you were taping up the Bronco to spray the raptor liner, and decided my best station would be behind the broom!

Ted - I won't be in the booth. I just get to come first thing in the morning and help wipe everything down, tape it up and get it ready. After that I'm just the man behind the glass.
