I got the new coupler installed with a new filter and 5 new quarts of VR1 20-50. But, with the temps at near zero today, I really did not want to fight starting the motor with it that cold and the oil that thick. So, I finally installed the body mount bushings that gave been sitting on my workbench for months.

The temp hit the 50s today to decided to crank it up. It started without much effort, just needs to be timed a little. I did not run it long because it had a pretty good ticking noise coming from the 5678 side valve cover. I shut it down and pulled the valve cover off to look around. I verified the exhaust manifold bolts were tight ( the manifold gaskets are new). I cranked it briefly without the valve cover on- it sounds like the noise is coming from the 6 or 7 area valve train. I pulled the rockers and checked to make sure the pushrods were not bent - all was good there. Rockers looked good too. Buttoned it back up and cranked it again - same noise.

The motor sat for some time ( not sure how long) so am curious is if this could be a stuck lifter and if so, will it fix itself when it warms up if I just let it ideal for a while? Or.....

Thoughts?

Man.... You just can't win can you?

Sounds like my kind of luck. Free bump with no advise here.

Farrell - that motor got pulled about three weeks before last years Super Cel. As we discussed it did have a not very loud tick on that side but it never affected driving it. The advise I got on the tick was drive it, it may run fine like that for a long time.

You want to post a clip so I / we can take a listen and see if it is the same. It was never very loud, Phred might remember the noise level??

I will tell you it was sitting around gathering dust here so if the guys on here think it is a stuck lifter and will loosen up I say warm it up and drive it some. If it is not too annoying and other than the noise it is running ok just drive it. If something happens and it throws a rod, etc... then no worries from my end. I had no plan to use it again.

I just hope it is not bad enough to keep you from still driving the truck.

What about the crack in your old manifold? Was it on that side? I still have my takeoffs if you think that might be it.

Hey Chris. I thought you had said the tick was on the passenger side, but I may have misunderstood you. The sound is on the driver side this time. Being it is your motor, I wanted to be extra careful not to hurt it, so I made sure to shut it down so I did not hurt it. The tick did not seem to be minor to me. At first I thought it sounded like interference and something was contacting the valve cover, but obviously that was not the case. I will see if I can get a video of it.

Well, it looks like the garage elves paid me a visit. I just cranked it up and the noise is gone! Whoooo hooooooo! She purrs like a kitten, just a little rich which I will tune out.

The part that I am pissed about now is I have to leave town for work tomorrow morning and won't be back until late Thursday night. Man I can't wait to get on the ride.

Chris, again, I am in deep gratitude for your generosity. Hell, we have net a couple times but you really don't know me. So to be willing to make the gesture you did speaks volumes on your character. I owe you big time.

Sorry, yes it was on the passenger side. That is great that noise is gone maybe it just needed to run a little.

Glad I could help, looking forward to seeing your new bronco in person.

Well, I have slowly been putting a few miles on it. I had a clutch pedal issue so have been replacing various bushings trying to address that. Also have a starter issue that popped up today......see my thread on that topic.

The motor itself seems to run really good.
