finally started tearing into the transmission/ transfer case that I pulled from my '76. looks really good inside and the fluid was super clean and still bright red, no bad smell either.
the truck this came from was last on the road in 1989 with about 80,000mi on the clock. at some point someone did have the pan off as evident by the booger welded repair job on the pan.

Hey Migs, I pulled my column to swap the collar, changed the lower bearing and left the upper because it seemed OK. Now the upper bearing is squeaking and feels a bit rough. Not saying yours will do the same, but mine crapped in less than a year.

Thanks for the heads up, Art. I'm going to chance it for now, don't really feel like taking it all apart right now. I can see the bearing, it looks good and feels good plus it's not sealed so I can inject some fresh grease in it.
guess I know who to go to if I do need to get in there, sound like you'll have plenty of practice.;D

The other day I finally got around to cutting the stock front shock mounts from the frame. didn't even bother cutting the top weld, just cut out the bottom one then hammered it back and forth untill the top weld broke away. took a little of the frame with it but much easier to weld that up than to try to get at the upper weld with the engine in place.;D

as for the transfer case, it's getting a teralow gear set and an extreme duty output assembly.
