It's been a couple of months now since I've done much to the Bronco so I figured it's time for an update. I had to clean out the garage again to get to it but now I hope to make some more progress.
the last thing I had done a little while back was to pull the small bearing rear axle assembly back out. it was giving me some leaking issues plus I wanted to upgrade. I had a big bearing housing from a '69 but it was a bit pitted and not really what I wanted.... so I splurged a little and bought new.

The pictures show the old axle removed and disassembled and the others compare the new housing to the 69 big bearing.

I'm thinking about adding a drain plug offset from the side of the pumpkin under an axle tube to drain the rear end. I think I would change fluid more often if I could drain it without having to yank axles and the chunk. I would likely cut a piece of pipe as a weld on armor ring around the set up kind of like what I have seen on Toyota's.

Thought I would mention this as you are working on your rear housing.

B,
Who did you get that housing from? We're the spring perches already welded in place? I have an original 77 rearend and it too is pitted. I thought about putting some high build primer on it, sand and paint. But new is nice!

I can agree with that... after dealing with the last one I can say that this housing will be getting a drain plug for sure!

got it from wild horses, after searching around it seemed to be one of the better deals out there considering the added options.
and yes, the perches where already welded, and from my quick checking of the angles they appear to be set to provide better pinion angle for lifted bronco's.

but... the perches are the normal length and I wanted the longer anti-wrap ones.... so I modified them today.;D

Do you plan to move the rear axle back any? 1/2"? 1"? That is my goal to move it back an inch. I wonder if WH would be able to do such a mod from the get go? Only one way to find out and that's ask WH.

yes, I will at least add another set of holes like I did on the last one. this time though I'm clamping the whole housing up in the cnc mill. it's bad enough opening the 1/2" hole up to 5/8" never mind drilling two from scratch with a hand drill.:p

thanks Dave, will be in touch with you on that. was planning on buying premade... don't think I need anything special for that.

I painted and installed the new style spring shackles I'm making. then started test fitting the axle housing to help with setting up my shock mounts. I designed them to be able to be bolted on as well but I'm going to weld this set on.

It looks like the shock mounts are for forward facing shocks? Is the plan for dual shocks or just like the forward mount? Or its a 66? Pretty cool stuff!!

Thanks! Just going with a single shock in the forward position. made them to take advantage of the body lift and utilize a bit longer shock.
