**** THIS MOTOR SWAP TO ****ING ****!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

****ING BULL ****!!!!!!!!!!!

ya know, for how much i have helped out my brother one would think he would be willing to help me out, but no.

if its at his house he might come out and help for a hour then go back inside. but if he has to come heir (10 mins away) he will act like you don't even exist.

i have more hours if not the same then he dose in that scout of his!!!!

but he keeps asking if i can come over and help him, ya right.

THE 351W IS NOTA DIRECT SWAP FROM THE 302!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

nothing lines up, it hits the fire wall, it needs to come back 1'' to mate up the the tranny(if it even would) but it will be 1'' away from the holes in the frame mounts!!!!!!!!!

WHAT THE ****????????????????

As soon as you start trying to upgrade/interchange, it gets sticky. Nothing lines up, nothing is straight forward, and there's certainly no manual for the if/thens of the infinite possibilities on motor combos.

That you're doing this on an uneven surface is inconceivable. If there's a rule of thumb, it's to work on a flat surface. I won't buy a house with an angled driveway because I know I'll be doing oil changes (and more) on it.

Slow down, take your time, it will all work out.

You're young, but the sooner you understand this, the better off you'll be:

good advice.

just a pain. the bronco is level just the ground is not.

i asked my mom to go pick me up a tranny jack.

just going to unbolt it, pull it back. drop the motor down, smash my fire wall if need be, then install the tranny.

the motor is just soooo close to just going in but it just wont.

thats whats been pissing me off. normally im pretty calm and cool about this stuff, took me a week to senter my axles under the bronco...(by myself again) guess with the stress of my GF still taking care of her mom in cali and no help at all and my work comming to a end with no work in site and bills...everything is getting to me...:-[

So after you get the motor in, what are you doing with the water pump and pulleys? Are you making it serpentine or sticking with V belts?

you should'nt have to touch the tranny. 302 & 351 blocks are the same length. the 351 is just taller witch makes it wider. look at why this tranny is'nt lining up right. like the cross member or something the previous owner might have created. i've done several 351 swaps and no its not a "direct swap". but its not a bad one either. take your time, that will make it a little easier.

sticking with v belt.

i need the right balancer to set it up tho, I'm fighting one thing at a time.

well i found allot out.
1, trannys don't feel good when resting on your arm.

2, the motor fits in like a dream. tho i might have a problem with my fan hitting my radiator. but might not.

3, the reason why nothing would line up was because my tranny mount was broken, and the transmission was pushed back a 1.5'' thus why the motor kept hitting my firewall and making everything not line up.

4, the 302 and the bronco where in love and i split them up. i wondered outside and the 302 was on its side again and the 5 quarts out oil was on the floor ;D my dad said he was working on his car and saw it just lean over. no damage again, it was sitting on the floor at the time with tires on each side of it.

explain that one to me!

well the tranny and t case are out. was going to just lift it up and slide it back but it wanted out of there so i had to lower it down with out it falling witch took a good part of the night. (205 was on the back still witch made it lean back)

going to try and get it all back in today.

round 7!

ding ding ding!

Take the front dress off of the 302 and put it all on the 351, then worry about the 302 later. Just get one going at a time. Use the 302 balancer, timing cover and water pump. The pump on the 351 in the pic looks like a serp, reverse rotation and those are specific to the timing chain covers because of the way the water ports are shaped.:)

well the balancer on the 302 is shot, so i need a new one ether way.

seems like i had a spare 302 timing cover, come to think of it!

ill root through my shed tomorrow. if not, might half to do as you say or hit the parts yards to find one.

just im in the middle of trying to sell the 71 with that 302. and need/want it to be complete for the buyer.

how can you tell the diff between the two water pumps?

ITS ALL IN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

the tranny went right in, and the T case took a bit more time to get in there. but it fits like a dream, now i can fight with everything else! ;D

oh, and during this swap my custom exhaust was bent somehow for the right down pipe??? just need to bend it back over.

i have never had a motor swap go this badly, i never had ANYTHING go this badly......well...besides the bronco falling off the stands during my axle swap :-[ but thats about it. just glad its all in there.

oooooook.

after frying my ignition box, not seating my TC in all the way taking the tranny out "AGAIN" and taking the pump and everything out and putting it back together to make sure no harm was done then wiring in a new stock ignition box.

the motor runs grate, and the tranny is working grate. :p

now just need a 302 balancer for the Windsor to put all my stuff back on the motor and this swap will be done!

Remove the motor mounts until you get the motor and trans connected, then lift the engine up enough to bolt the mounts back it. The extra height makes it impossible to tilt enough to get it in with them on.
