does the rear differential vent tube just dump into the frame? meaning if it overflowed it would just run out on the ground????

i need to replace the vent hose and it just runs into a hole in the frame and dissappears?

Yes the hose just dumps out into your frame. You can take a $10 vent filter from the parts store and add that to the end if you'd like. I've run all of mine up into my engine compartment to keep them out of the dust, and out of water.

The frame is just a convienent place. You can run it anywhere you want. The vent needs to be high so water doesnt get in. It really has nothing to do with oil getting out. It just vents air to keep from blowing your seals when the air in the axle housing expands from the heat of the gears and oil. Heres my vent for my D20. Just rubber fuel hose and a cheapy filter.

Not really, they are menat to allow for expansion of the air and oil when they get hot. They in effect seal the axle housing. You want something that will allow for the consumption of fuel on that gas tank.

Ok. Just looking for something that would be simple and clean up the hose and filter I have now.

Yep even modern trucks have the same for the rear diff... key is if you put a hot diff into the water say crossing a stream, that quick cool down will actuall try to pull water through the vent.... So if you do a lot of mudding or water fording try to get them as high as possible.

Interesting. So that's a sealed cap, not a vent. The bellows design allows for expansion/contraction, but you don't have an open end allowing dirt to get in to the system. Cool.

Anyone see a reason why this wouldn't be better than a filter? Unless maybe the expansion/contraction capacity isn't enough?

Yes. If you get water inside past the seals an open vent will allow the water vapor to be eliminated. With a system completely closed the water has nowhere to go.

It should be fine for a trail rig that never gets the oil hot. but that little bellows was made for a tiny little ATV axle that has very small volume in it. It does not have enough capacity to properly handle a full size axle that actually gets hot. I have seen issues where the axle breather wasn't large enough to breath right and needed to be stepped up a size (3/16 to 1/4). If it can't breath freely through a 3/16 line to be happy, that little ballon isn't going to take it. I would run them on trail rigs no problem, but I wouldn't run them on the street.

Addicted, how did you attached it to the D20? I know in stock form its got a mushroom looking vent.

I pulled the mushroom vent off with a pair of vise grips. Its just kinda pressed in there. Then I tapped the hole. I cant remember the size tap I used off the top of my head but it was an NPT tap. Then I just screwed in a brass 90 and attatched a brass barbed fitting to that. Pretty simple and cheap..

Found it. Tap is a 1/4-18 NPT. Just make sure you tap a little at a time and check it. If you tap to far the 90 elbow wont get tight or it wont get tight facing the right direction.
