Not sure I didn't even catch that. It's a fall 72' build that's a 72'? That should be a 73'. Might be one of those P's and Q's 72'/73' deals? @Viperwolf1
It is odd. If you go by the build date it's 2 months into the 1973 model year. Notice the axle code doesn't specify power steering and the big gap between build and release dates.

I guess I was remembering it wrong then, but I thought we had already discussed the fact that there were some very late 72s that got power steering.
Just like the discrepancy between J-shift and T-shift during that period, and transmission types.
Then again, maybe I was just remembering that some that were sold as 72s had automatic transmissions.

I wouldn't consider it a very late 72' though, or even late lol.

Here's another early build 72' built in 9/72' that should be a 73' with power steering but not listed on the axle code either. @Viperwolf1 @toddz69

It's earlier than the other 72' marti with power steering.

Dang this info looks familiar......oh, it’s my rig, lol. And yes, it’s one of the “P’s & Q’s” Broncos. Also notice it has “Avocado Sport” seats, which technically don’t exist. (Sport interiors are parchment) It’s one of the early Rangers. Always wished we could find someone who worked at Ford back then and knows the reason these were held back, but sold as 1972s.

Here’s a few pics from when the PO bought it back in the 90’s still wearing its original paint and faded Ranger stripes. He changed the top to a half cab and had it painted (unfortunately) before I got it.

Everyone may get a huge laugh from my question... but I figure if I dont ask I won't learn. For all you guys & gals that have the '72 explorer sports, does anyone know of a source for the brown armrests or the "Ginger" random stripe cloth seats? Mine are in need of refurbishing.

And mine also has an ancient power steering pump, I was always under the impression a guy couldn't get power steering in '72 and a previous owner must have put it in. Not sure what make/model/year it's from though.

I emailed BroncoJack my marti report so he can post it up for me. I'm noticing my marti report has another oddity... my trucks HP is certified at a given rpm... most everyone else's hp is left blank. Does anyone know why(?)

There aren't ginger arm rests available or the other ginger parts. People are using a vinyl dye to replicate the color. The fabric is available from SMS upholstery, but I've read that they can be 1 year out on orders. freewheelinbroncos.com was working on the Ranger and Explorer interiors but I'm not sure if they are available yet.

I can't answer the HP question, mine has 139 HP @ 4000 rpm on the warranty tag.

Thanks for working to get your Marti posted. I'm stoked to be down to just a few unknown 72 E/S paint colors. With so few I'm wondering if they might be special order paint colors. It will be interesting to see if I can get the last 15 accounted for.

I notice it's a Denver DSO - tuned for the altitude maybe? Any other Denver DSO have that oddity?
Interesting, his Marti shows the HP & RPM, but mine does not. My warranty tag does and matches his numbers. Both ours are Denver DSO.

I've never paid any attention to HP ratings, so I don't know what others are rated.

I’ve seen so many of both, that I never really put any thought into it. Same for other model Ford vehicles.
Some list rpm, some don’t. Never bothered to take note of any similarities.

Remember that the 72 model year was when they changed from gross horsepower rating to “net” horsepower rating.
Even with engines that did not change one iota in any respect, they often lost 40 to 60 hp on paper based on the change in ratings to make them more consistent between one manufacturer and another.
And to make them more realistic as the customers experienced them with all accessory‘s attached and the engine attached to the transmission.

All of the usual reasons probably apply, for any inconsistencies we see in how data tags were stamped, or decals were printed.

I wonder if a call to the Marti's would be able to find a correlation between VIN tags with certified HP and a particular sales office... maybe it was a State-mandated thing(?) Some of the Martis posted on here are post 1972's and their certified HP was left blank.

🤔

And a shout out to LUBr luvR - who gave me an insider tip and I'm now the proud owner of a pair of brown armrests that look to be in (from the Ebay pictures...) pretty decent shape. Thank you!!

My guess is that it's just a random Marti thing in relation to the research they do on each VIN. Your Marti has the HP/RPM on the image of the tag and in the description in the left column. My Marti doesn't have it mentioned anywhere and I bought the "Super deluxe" version. But the info on my actual warranty tag. I'll have to check out the framed information I have from them and see what they included. I'm out of town for a couple weeks right now though.

From seeing all the "Marti Mistakes" and inconsistencies, in these reports you can't put blind faith into their process and info. It's awesome to have them as a source of info, but they aren't perfect and don't know everything we wish they did. I know the '66 guys feel this pain.
