Bessie Rides Again!
Well, about 4 months later I finally get around to working on the U13. Of course here in KC we've had a heck of a winter so that didn't help.
I've been fighting battery issues all winter and think I finally got to the bottom of things.
I can't remember when it was, but it was a rare nice Winter day a 6-8 weeks ago and I wanted to drive the Bronco around a bit. I attached the old battery charger a couple of days ahead of time so I could get the beast to turn over. When I went out to start it up, no luck - deader than a door nail! Well, I rolled it out of the garage and jumped it with my Jeep. I let it idle for a while hoping to charge up the battery a bit before my ride.
Well, I started out and was heading down Metcalf towards where I work. I was at about 115th street when I stalled out. I was on a slight uphill grade, and I had no juice to even get off the road. Well, even though it was a Saturday it was super busy! I got out, slipped the Bronco into neutral, and proceeded to push the Bronco to the shoulder. That is when I realized there was no shoulder, only a turn lane. Well, I kept pushing (thankfully I'm pretty strong) and then a good guy jumped out of his truck and helped me get the Bronco around the corner. We proceeded to jump start it again. At this point I decided to go straight to Advance which was less than a mile away. I got there, and one of the tech's came out to test my battery. It tested fine (although nearly dead of course). Then the tech decided to test the alternator. He said "well, there's your problem - that alternator is no good"! I then said, "really? I bought it from you guys 2 months ago!"
Well, I ran home (thankfully I made it no trouble) and tore out the alternator, and decided to replace the coil too. I ran back up to Advance and warranty swapped the alternator and bought a new coil. It was an easy job and I back up and running in no time.
Fast forward to about a month ago. I knew we had a nasty snow storm on the way and decided to move the Bronco to the parking garage at work so I could get my Jeep in the garage at home. I went to start it up, and low and behold the battery was dead again. So I plugged in the charger again. Well, 2 hours later and I still had no start up juice. Out come the jumper cables and boom, Bronco starts and I'm off to work. I get the Bronco parked and leave it there for a few days. I go out and move the Bronco every few days over the course of the next 2 weeks so I don't get in trouble by the security guards. Then one day I find I have a dead battery again. I jump the Bronco with the Jeep and finally move the Bronco back to my house.
A few days ago, I notice the battery is dead again. I knew our weather was going to be really nice this weekend so I really wanted to get Bessie out for a little while. Thankfully I'd talked to my dad about the battery issues and he asks if I know for sure that the battery charger is actually working. I say, well I think so, how do I tell? He says the easiest way is to touch the positive and negative clamps together quickly while it's plugged in to see if there are sparks. So I decide to try it out. I plug it in and proceed to psych my self up to test the thing out. It took a few minutes to work up my courage (I hate electricity) and once I do it, I realize that the charger I've been using for months is totally not working! So yesterday I ran to Harbor Freight and bought a new charger. I hooked it up and immediately saw activity on the gauge and new I had a winner.
Today after Easter Dinner I got time to work on the Bronco. I was able to fire it right up. Then I pulled it out of the garage, and proceeded to install a battery disconnect (since it only gets driven occasionally). I also had to replace the brake light switch, which went pretty good. Then I replaced the voltage regulator (I think most everything has been replaced now). The right rear tire has a slow leak so I topped it off and then I was off for a nice Sunday drive!
