The sector shaft literally fell out the bottom of my 4x4x2 box. All the fluid covered the axle and drivers tire. Is the worm gear ok? Can this be rebuilt? What causes this problem?
If it fell out it's broken. If it's broken there's probably other damage. The case might be usable, piston maybe (piston and worm are easy to find parts), sector shaft and case are hard to find.
It goes in from the top. The top of it won't fit through the bottom. I don't understand how you say it literally fell out but steers fine. Perhaps we need a picture here.
Hope you don't mind jperry, but I stole this from the NorCal site:
Looks like the lower seal popped out?
Sector shaft is still inside the box, or all that hardware holding your steering would by laying on the ground with only the draglink keeping things together.
My issue was a fractured sector shaft due to the steering stops on the knuckles not being adjusted correctly. DO NOT re-use that sector shaft unless you have it magnafluxed first. The cracks can be impossible to see.

I don’t mind. Thank you. Yeah the seal did pop out along with the washer and the retaining clip. The shaft is still up I the box and turned the wheels as I drove home thinking like I was just low on fluid. I will take it apart sometime this week, hopefully.
