Transmission oil change

I need to change the oil in my stock 1970 3 speed manual transmission. A while back I thought I read a thread (that I can’t seem to find again) about the bottom bolt of the transmission is the drain. I guess it’s a through bolt that goes all the way into the transmission. Can anyone confirm if this is correct. Also, what would I seal it with after to avoid leaking. Thanks.

Correct.
Pipe dope, maybe a little RTV. A copper washer under the head. Take your pick and compare to what is there when the bolt comes out.

Hi, the plug in the tranny is a pipe plug, not really a bolt.
Most of the time you do not need a sealant.
Just remove the higher filler plug, then the drain plug.
Use a pipe thread sealant if you like.
Good luck

The fill plug is pipe thread. That just takes a touch of pipe dope.
The drain plug is a bolt that is removed. Not a pipe thread.

When doing head bolts that go into water jackets, a little pipe dope is put on the threads to keep the pressurized coolant from weeping up the bolt and leaking into the engine. The transmission isn't pressurized. I would just use a little pipe dope on the threads.

Must depend on year as I remember the drain bolt in my 1973 transfer case was a bolt.
