Good morning. I’m first going to say wow. This thread is going to save my life. I’m not by any stretch an EFI/engine electronics guy. I’m building a 67 Bronco and have an Explorer 5.0 with the two wire cam sensor. I was told buy someone on here ( I’m sorry I forgot who) to purchase the Holley # 550-1316 because I said I want to use the OEM two coil packs and I’m using the 4R70W trans. With that being said. I’m going to put my hat in my hands and pray someone on here can be patient enough to help walk me through this (what I consider to be) nightmare. After reading these posts I feel like my head is going to explode.
Anyways im getting ready to start laying out my harnesses both the Painless body harness and the Holley terminator. I was made aware that a loom will have to be made to run my OEM coils. What do I need to do to get things ready to start installing this Holley kit?
You did in my opinion get the correct kit for your setup. I would still suggest moving to a 3 wire Cam and defiantly 3 wire Crank. I also think starting a new thread for your install would be great as not much is needed to get that harness to work.

Cam. Solution is to purchase a ford cam synchronizer & sensor for 98 5.0 Explorer
The old explorers had 3 wire sensors.

You can't just change the sensor (top) as the synchronizer is different (according to my notes)
Also for whatever its worth upto 2008 on the ford 6 cylinder 4.2 the sensor is the same but the synchronizer is a different length.

Ok I can do that. Will my harness need some modifications for these 3 wire sensors? Should I purchase both cam and crank sensors for a 98?
If you think it’s better to start a new thread I can.

Yes your harness will need some modifications, I need to find your harness diagram since mine didn't have the transmission part then I will get back to you on that. For the crank sensor you can do what I did, or purchase one from Holley or other. See post #8 on page 1 of this thread.

  • Cherry - Gs100502 - Geartooth Hall Effect Sensor.
    • Now ZF Gs100502

for the wiring you have 2 options for the coil packs. Rewire to only use one coil driver, giving you a hot spare or use both with the small advantage of less to undo if you plan to do coil on plug later. Let me know.

also I know it sucks but it'w worth it to buy the Holley can to usb dongle/cable so you can program and monitor from your laptop or computer.

Ok. I’d like to use the factory type coils so I can use the OEM bracket. So whatever you think is best for wiring.
I’ll look at your crank sensor post. Does it have part numbers?
