351W EFI conversion, what else do I need?

I have been collecting parts for converting my moderately built 351W to Ford EFI for a few years now. I have been running a Holley 4DI setup for over 15 years (transplanted from my FSB) but I’m thinking it’s time to try the Ford EFI to squeeze out that last bit of power I know is in there.

Current motor/driveline and other useful info:
- Full roller 351W (9000 miles on it)
- Trick flow heads
- Cam was supposed to produce ~400hp and 400 ftlb of torque. It is a custom grid with EFI in mind. If it is crutial I can probably dig up the cam specs.
- 10.5:1 compression
- MSD Billit distributer with TFI IV module mounted to distributer.
- Accell E-core replacement coil
- 4R70W
- Dana 20 with Tera low gears
- 4.86: gears
- 35” tires
- BCB shorties in to 2.5” tube going in to a single Magnaflow (longest model) with 3” out the back.
- O2 bungs in each side of the exhaust about 10" or so down from the header flanges
- Modified Explorer front dress.
- Taurus fan on a 4.0 Explorer radiator.
- 1” body lift
- Fiberglass hood with the big raised area in the center
- HD West Coast Broncos motor mounts
- No fender wells
- Hydroboost installed in the clutch position
-

Here is what I got for the EFI convesion:
- I have all of the efi stuff from a 93 Mustang except the wire harness and computer. The throttle body that came on this is a Edelbrock BBK 3828 70mm model.
- I have a 92 Mustang harness that I will be reworking (electrical work doesn’t intimidate me at all)
- I have a lightning lower. It has the sensor on th e#5 runner in it from the Lightning. (I also have a 351 truck lower)
- I am going to be picking up an Explorer upper this week from a local fellow Bronco owner. (thanks Robert)
- I have a TwEECer RT that I picked up for a great price a couple years ago.
-

I know I need:
- Some form of an EEC computer. I would prefer it if the computer was capable of at least limping the motor without the TwEECer installed.
- A pair of oxygen sensors (I already have bungs installed in the exhaust)
- Any sensors that are not mounted directly to the engine.
- High pressure fuel pump
- 24 lbhr injectors
- I suspect that I will need an intake spacer to clear the upper intake over my very tall valve covers. Weather it clears or not I intend to run as tall of a spacer as I can fit to promote torque.
-

I am also intending on installing a speed sensor from a mid 80’s Bronco.

Other useful stuff I have:
- I have a wideband O2 sensor setup that I could install, but if I am going to run 2 O2 sensors for the EFI I will need to have another bung installed in the exhaust.
- A good understanding of how EFI works (15 years of experience and reading with my 4DI)
- Dash mounted vacuum gauge
-

The fuel system that is currently installed in the Bronchole has the 2 tanks plumbed in to a 6 way valve. The valve feeds in to a Carter low pressure pump that feeds a fuel filter. I have modified the fuel filter to recirculate a small amount of fuel back in to the return line (like the BCB accumulator). The filter output runs to the Holley in-line 15 PSI fuel pump. 3/8 SS line delivers from the pump to the back of the intake manifold. A 3/8 SS return line runs from the back of the intake manifold to the T at the fuel filter and then in to the 6 way valve. I intend to replace the Holley fuel pump with a similar format unit (like what Ryan has in his writups) and replace the rubber lines with EFI rubber lines to handle the increased pressure for the new EFI system.

I have read all the pages in Ryan’s site and have been watching EFI threads on here for years. I think I have a good understanding of how EFI works. I am looking for any advice related to my application.

I do have a EEC computer. It looks like it is from a 1986 Mustang 5.0. It has a program code that is not on Ryans list (BP1). Ah, I see, at the lower left of the sticker is has some configuration data, EEC-IV = good, SFI = Sequencial Fuel Injection = good, SD1 I assume to mean speed density = not good :(.

Wow, thought this was a tech article at first!!!;D

If you've read through Ryans site, then you already know what all else you need!

I didn't see a fuel rail listed. I used a truck fuel rail so I could get the regulator at the rear and drivers rear fuel connections. I tried the 5.0 Explorer fuel rails but they were more of a pain to get to fit than the truck rails. PM me if you want to try them...

I used a 3/8" spacer to clear my BBK adjustable regulator. I did have a 1" spacer but even with a 2" body lift and a hood equivalent to WH High Country hood, the throttle body hit. PM me if you want to buy a 1" spacer. Plenty of clearance in the middle of the hood, but the TB hit the hood where the hood transitioned to the stock height, since the throttle body sticks so far out to the side. That is with the stock EGR spacer (still toying with hooking up the EGR).

With the mixed bag of parts, I would seriously consider installing the wide band to make sure you don't run too lean on initial startup.

I believe any of the standard code EECs will run in limp mode.

Ya, I have been doing a bit of reading on the fuel rails. I got the one that came with the 93 mustang and the one that came with the 95 351W. I may get one with the explorer upper also.

I know that the various configuration uppers stand at various heights (a bit anyways) I also like the 90° bend that come bolted on to the explorer uppers. I guess as far as fuel rails go I need to take what I got and experiment a bit and see what works for me. On the spacer/clearance thing I will start with the minimum it takes to get it to fit and then see how much more I can run.

Looks like I am going to go with the E2000 pump. It will fit right where my current mid PSI pump is sp swapping in is simple. I really need to get my act together and get this conversion going. Probably need to clean a hole in the garage fisrt so I have a place to pile this stuf up and and make some sense of it.

Are all E2000 pumps created equal? I found a bunch of new ones on EBAY for $40-$50. Just wondering if its woth it to look at a preferred brand. Even if it is a few more $.

As far as I can tell all the E2000 pumps hook up the same.

FWIW, I'm running one of the Ebay cheapie E2000 pumps. But I bought 2...
