Your PO and mine must have been related. Mine had welded on bumpers as well. Had a hell of a time getting them off. I modified them and bolted them back on.

Ha...A previous EB I bought, without title, but with DMV paperwork, later came back as a salvage title and frame was out of wack...hence the reason why it didn't have doors and a top because they wouldn't have lined up.

The PO of one I used to have did the same but went a couple steps further. Made the front from 2x2x3/16 square tube, C4x5.4, 3/16 floor plate all to hold a Ramsey PTO winch with 300' of 3/8" cable. In addition, to power the winch, he notched the track bar and welded a half moon to it so the drive shaft would clear. It was a solid shaft from the transfer case to the winch. I estimate the front lost 450-475# with the help of a torch.

PS. If anyone is looking, the winch is for sale.

Your PO's may have been the dealer! My '71 had welded on "Barden" type bumpers (big heavy steel diamond plate suckers) and whoever did the work, did a really good job of reinforcing things. Took a long time to get them off even with what was then a new-fangled toy called a plasma-cutter. I'd never seen one before but my buddy that worked for a body shop had messed with it a couple of times.

Could have been our inexperience at the tool, but it was also a very reinforced setup. In fact, I still have the remaining I-beam mounts inside my frame rails. Cut them off back a little and kept them in as "reinforcements" for when I got to playing too hard.
That was back in '77 if I remember.

Guy I bought mine from had to use a plasma cutter to cut off the custom bumpers the previous owner installed. He said it lifted the bronco up a good inch or two after they were cut off.

I call them POO. Previous Owner Options.

The POO is usually the first thing I have to deal with when getting a Bronco that is new to me.

I agree, Welded on "Custom Bumpers" is usually the worst.

Next is floor pans that just cover the RUST problem and don't actually fix it.

Then there is the Fire Hazard of a Rat's Nest of wiring. The original harness has so many spices and open wires that anything is about to happen.

I had a bronco that the PO had installed diamond plate floors in the bed area. Galvanized sheet metal for the front floors over portions of the original floors. Oh god it was such a mess I made the best of it but I never did completely fix it.
I also had another that the PO had sawzalled the dash in half for some reason, I could never figure out why? They took a 8" wide section out of the middle of the dash,, from the bottom right up to the top. All the heater controls and radio section were gone?? The rest of the truck was pretty solid.

Oh one of my all time favorites is the PO of my 67 sprayed the inside of the body with undercoating. Yup floor boards, bed area, inside the bed rails. I have scraped and away at it but even after 15 years of owing it it still has it in areas!!

I just bought a perfectly rust free uncut U14. You would think with such a rare one they would have not mickey moused it up but of course they did! The shifter was the best part. They fabricated a floor shifter using two steel rods, one for each rail! Also cut the the frame rails for big bumpers, and the ugliest seats they could find. All easily fixable but just goofy.

I love when floor pans are covered with metal....because to cut and replace wouldn't take that much longer.
