so how has everyone been mounting their pcm, just cutting a hole in the firewall and using the pcm box as it was used for the explorer? I dont recall seeing any pictures of this part of the conversion.

Here's a couple of pics. I put the OBDII port under the hood, next to the relays and fuses. Kept it simple, plus using a bluetooth scanner, I didn't see a reason to have it in the cab. Coolant tubes looped from the heater tube. I lengthened my harness for the PCM 36" so I could mount the PCM inside the cab.

I was checking out your garage and I noticed that your intake looks a little different. My intake tube has a 90 degree bend in it, yours comes strait out. Possibly a difference in years?

todays progress

Today I got the rest of the harness out and the obd2 port out. I also cut out the o2 sensor bungs and removed the computer box. The computer box was a pain just because it was stuck in really bad. I worked a gasket scraper around the outside and wiggled and pulled, it finaly did let loose. I thought it would be harder to get the dash out but it wasnt too bad. I think the only thing I need for my harness yet is a rollover switch. Anyone know where the rollover switch can be found on a 98 explorer. Here are some pics of my progress.

Progress

I got my cam sensor out of the explorer today it looks suprisingly similar to the hei that I pulled out of my 351 a wile back.. Looks like the only 2 differences are the size of the oil pump hex shaft and the diameter of the housing is slightly smaller on the explorer. Im thinking a sleave for the housing. I wonder if anyone makes a stepped down oil pump shaft that would take care of the smaller hex drive. Ill have to look around a little.

I also pulled a couple relay boxes and the rollover switch for my harness.

For the cam sensor, I believe that you can use the one off a 3.8 v6. Google it and there is all kinds of info on this swap. I believe that it has been done on here before too.

The info about the 3.8 cam position sensor is in this thread. Starting post #29.

http://classicbroncos.com/forums/showthread.php?t=222900&page=2

That has this link for corral.net

http://forums.corral.net/forums/aem-ems/938696-aem-edis-8-install.html

Thanks for the link, thats a good one. Im planning on heading to the u-pull it this saturday if the weather isnt too bad , ill see if I can pick up a 3.8 sensor. Here are a couple pics of my latest progress. I cleaned up my upper intake and cover plate, fixed the cover plate to read 5.8 with some jb weld and a dremel tool and painted it all. Im planning on painting the numbers or behind the numbers with black or silver, not sure yet.

parts

I made it to the u pull it yard today. I found 3.8 sensors in a bunch of vans but they were hard to get to because there is a hard coolant line that blocks the sensor. I found a thunderbird with a 3.8 that was easy acess so I got that one. I also picked up a spare computer. I was hoping to find one from a 98 cause thats what my donor is but the closest I could find was a 97 with a build date of 12/97 . Im hoping it should work. They seemed like a good deal I got the computer for $25 and the sensor for $15. I also got my injectors and fuel rails pulled last night. It looks like they should work good with the exception of having to replace the rubber connector lines in the rear. Here are some pics.

That PCM is a 98 model year, should be fine. Either PCC1 or NRT1 will work with a 98 harness.

When you make your adapter collar use Melling part# IS-84A for your oil pump shaft. It will give you the extra needed length. (Thank Lars for the info).

I ran the info for the collars by a local machine shop to see about having a batch made up. The price was less than ideal unless I bought a large quantity. ($100 each at 10 units / $45 each if I bought 30 or more). I'll shop around a bit more when I get some more time.

Thanks I.m glad to hear the computer will work. I thought it would but wasnt sure. After i get the adapter made up i'll get in touch with you and send the harness, computers, and sensor so you can position it for me. Thanks Jason

Explorer

I pulled the body off the explorer today, not really efi related but it made for some good pictures so I thought I would share them. Im hoping to sell off the trans and rear to free up some cash for my project. Im going to hold on to the motor and probably scrap the rest if I cant sell any body parts localy. My rollback is a 72 f600 ex u-haul truck, very slow but it has a great bed and hydraulics. enjoy;D

Impressive pics. Would have been more impressive if you popped a squat under it!
