what did you use a seal or silicone? I have been told that the cork end seals should be thrown away and replaced with rtv. I still usualy use the seals and give them a light coat of rtv.

Well I guess you could go with the more is better method with the rtv again or try a gasket. Hopefully I have better luck , I really hate oil leaks.

progress

I got my motor trans and rear out of the explorer last night. I posted up the trans for sale on here. I started working on the motor today pulling the serp setup off. I got most of the setup off but I still need to pull the crank pulley. I dont have the right bolts with my puller to fit the threads in the pulley. I think that they are 7mm metric bolts. Ill try to see if I can pick some up tommorow.

im not sure if i will get the balancer rebalanced and use the whole explorer serp setup or try and adapt the trigger wheel to my existing setup. I wish i would have went explorer serp setup a long time ago instead of making the truck setup work.

I used an aftermarket bronco balancer with drivenautoparts aluminum pulley. Now with my squeaky belt problem, I have not been able to eliminate this pulley as the culprit yet but I have a hard time seeing how it would be. Just another option.

I didn't need the trigger wheel since I am EEC-IV so not sure what folks are doing about that. I imagine it will necessitate rebalancing.

that looks like a good option for converting a 351 over to an explorer serp setup. If I wasnt going with the full explorer efi I would probably go that direction. My main reson for converting to the explorer serp is to get the trigger wheel pulley and sensor mount on the timing cover.

I cant think that the pulley would be your problem, I have had problems with serp belt squeeking on my mustang and it turned out to be the belt tensioner.

The water pump bolts will work to pull the balancer. Just did it a few weeks ago at the junkyard. Didn't have the correct bolts and was desperate and figured it out real quick. It's not perfect, but will work.

thirdtime sorry I didnt see your post , I went in town today and found some 7 mm bolts. The bolts were not long enough so i had to make a adapter from a large washer. I drilled out the center of the washer added some holes and tapped 3 of them and it came right off. I stripped down the explorer serp stuff tonight to start cleaning it all up. I think I will probably get a new belt tensioner and new idler pulleys.

No real progress to mention lately, I did paint up my cover plate tonight. I need to get motivated and get going on this project. Here is a pic of the cover plate.

Thanks Hank, I cut the old explorer ones off because they were too short , im planing on getting some efi line and using the explorer rails. Im hoping to use the flex lines and quick couplers from the explorer too, they are in real nice shape. Even the lines to the tank are in great shape so i plan on trying to use them if i can.

$172 for a complete rebuild and rebalance of mine
$191 for a new balancer they have on stock
$50 To rebalance mine if thats all it needs

Im going to get it boxed up and sent out hopefully I can get away with just a rebalance.

I got the aluminum serp brackets and idlers cleaned up and painted along with the timing cover and crank sensor the other day. They turned out good.

Forward progress

Today I ordered a new cam sensor, the one I got from the u pull it seemed kinda tight. I also cleaned up my alternator and went in town and bought a timing cover gasket set and water pump. Then I cut and widened my coil pack mount to fit the 351 intake. It turned out good, hopefully it wont be in the way of anything.

cam sensor

I pulled the cam sensor from a thunderbird with a 3.8 I belive it was a 96 im prety sure the number on it started with F6 ,I should have looked at the door jam. I took it to work today (I work at a ford dealer) and they had a hard time getting the number to come up in the ford computer so they ordered me one for a 96 thunderbird and we will see if it matches up. I have been told these are a common problem so thats why I decided to go with a new one. I found lots of vans at the u pull it with the same sensor but the sensor wouldnt come out without removing a hard coolant line and i just couldnt get it to come loose so i moved on and found the thunderbird. The thunderbird was much easier to get to the sensor.
