I need to remove a fan assembly of of a newer Explorer serpentine setup. Do you just put a wrench on the large hex shaft and unscrew it? Its the plastic fan with a fan clutch.

Yes. There are tools you can rent/borrow from auto parts stores to help hold the pulley. I made one with a 2 ft long piece of scrap. Drilled holes to put the pulley bolts thru it and it worked great. It is right hand threaded.

Yes it just unscrews. Breaking it loose is a major pain, but after it is loose it generally comes off real nice. They make fan wrench tools just for the job. I finally bought a set of my own. Only used them every once in a while, but they are worth it when I need them.

I just did mine which was a major pain. I initially rented the kit at AutoZone. However, the kit does not come with a 36mm wrench. Then, I purchased the correct kit from Kragen, but the attachment that goes over the 4 bolts on the pulley was too small. I re-rented the AutoZone kit and used it in conjunction with my newly purchased wrench. Unfortunately, I was beginning to round the nut because it was practically welded to the water pump. I eventually had my mechanic friend help me remove it. I unbolted the fan/water pump, attached it to a vice, and then we used a chain-style strap wrench, along with a pliers wrench to finally remove the fan. He suggested placing the wrench over the nut, then hitting it very hard with a mini sledge to shock the nut into loosening, if I were to do it again.

Good Luck!
