Got REAL bored at work and added up all my Bronco expenses since purchase.
Adding a fudge factor of about $0.12/mile based on this year's lost receipts, I ended up with an estimated total of $64305. That works out to $0.69/mile ($0.196/mile in fuel costs). Guess I'm still not beating the IRS
Note that none of these prices are adjusted for inflation.
By category, that breaks down to the following:
Restoration: $12137
Repair: $12126
Maintenance: $2544
Modifications: $372
Tires: $2520
Fuel: $17129 (6120 gallons total)
Gov: $1025
Purchase: $5500
Fudge: $10950
Categories were defined as follows:
Restoration: Any parts initially required to restore vehicle. This includes sheet metal, paint, glass, bushings, springs, trim, seat covers, etc. Basically anything from one of the Bronco Vendors. There are a few restoration charges after my initial restoration due to projects like re-doing my paint job and replacing a cracked steering wheel/dashboard.
Repair: Any parts required to return vehicle to restored state after the initial restoration. These include bushings, radiator, starter, and other big-ticket mechanical items that are outside normal maintenance. There is one $5000 repair charge that includes labor; this was the machine work for my engine rebuild.
Maintenance: This covers typical maintenance activities like oil changes, packing/replacing bearings, chassis lube, etc. A lot of these receipts are lost forever on the bottom of old oil jugs.
Modifications: Any random parts added that are outside a restoration (in my mind). This includes an amp and speakers, engine block heater, spare tire cover, center console, and other bits that probably don't warrant their own category.
Tires: Tires and tire mounting. This is the only other category to include labor.
Fuel: Fuel...
Gov: Registration and insurance.
Purchase: Initial purchase price.
Fudge: Estimated value of missing receipts based on value of receipts missed so far this year. Nearly all of the missing charges are maintenance items, so I elected to base the fudge factor on mileage.
Worst part is I'm probably underestimating
