I just installed the electric fan from a Mercury Sable wagon. Fan is the same as the one from a Taurus I am told. The fan has three wires going to the motor, one wire goes to the back of the motor and to the front. Then there is one wire additionally to the front and rear of the motor. When I hooked the fan up, it draws ALOT of juice, enough to squeel the 140 Amp alternator. How has everyone else hooked up there fan??? I can`t imagine that the fan should that much juice to affect my alternator this badly. HELP!!!!?:? ?:?

the only right way to wire that fan is to use a relay. That is how that fan is wired in the Taurus/Sable cars from the factory. Is that how you have it wired? I have heard that that fan draws close to 40 amps on startup and around 15-20 continuously. The only other thing to check is the belt tension.

Does anyone have a wiring diagram/schematic for this fan? I wired it thru a thermostat directly to the battery for now.

Indian Harbour Bch,
this was a mod on a mustang hotrod site:
http://www.fordmuscle.com/archives/2003/02/electricfan/index.shtml

You need a massive 70 amp relay for that Biz-otch cuz initla current draw is over 60 amps and sustains almost 40 amps as said above.

i attempted this and actually bought the Hayden fan controller and giant Bosch relay. On the fan there are 2 hot wires; one is low speed, the other high and ground.

Cracker, One question, How did you get yours to fit? Mine didn't fit by a mile so all that crap i wasted $ on

I have a Taurus fan on mine. The black wire is ground. I only have it set-up for the high speed. Buy a relay from NAPA ST85 it is about 40 bucks. You can wire it through an adjustable therm, or do like I did and wire it so that it is on when the engine is running. I do have a toggle if I ever need to turn it off. My truck will idle all day at 175 degrees.

Well, I have finally figured everything out, thanks to Pirate4x4.com. They have a huge tech section that had all of my info I needed. I hooked the low speed up thru a thermostat, to come initially when the temp gets hot. The low speed pulls just as much if not more than my previous fan. I don`t expect that I will need the high speed, but if I do, I have it hooked up thru a relay and ona switch. I used my old gas switch in the dash for my switch. One side sends power for the low speed relay and thermostat, the other sends power to the high speed relay. I had to "trim" the shroud to fit , it is VERY close, so I am going to play on some rocks locally to ensure the shroud won`t hit anything while in use. I am using an aftermarket Griffin radiator to accomodate my placement of my winch behind and under the grill. I will know alot more after this weekends run up Mt. Blanca, where the EB has had problems in the past with running hot.

Indian Harbour Bch,
Cracker,
would you be so kind as to take some pics of your setup and give me a peek? I'd love to see your setup.
Good luck with your run this weekend.

supermottl,
I will take a couple of shots of the motor and fan setup. It is very crowded in there, so I don`t know how they will turn out. PM your email address, and I will send them out to you. I bought a new heavy duty relay for the high fan. I went to my local Carquest dealer and they sold me a continuous use solenoid for $30. I doubt that I will use the high fan much, but better safe than fire later..;) It is the same one as NAPA ST85, only $10 cheaper.

I ran mine through a relay using just high speed. I'm using a 3G alternator as well so amperage draw is not a big concern for me. I started with a thermostat off the battery but it wasn't coming on early enough. I left this in place and wired a switch in as well off the accessory side of the ign. switch for running around town. In the end I actually need to use it on the freeway as well since the shroud limits airflow through my Northern Aluminum radiator.

To fit them in did require a large amount af fab work to the core support though so the radiator could be moved forward a couple of inches and down a few inches.
