Tis the beauty of an ORB fill or drain port, a AN fitting with the right size o-ring on it will screw in and seal.

[EDIT]Oddly, NPT isn't so easy to do in a mfg environment. Can not visually inspect them, they have to be to gauged for how deep the threads go, and if they don't go far enough or go too far then the seal suffers. ORB is easy to visually inspect, and easy to form with the correct tool.[/EDIT]

Buy your own port tool and make the ports yourself.

Related derailment….

I make a good portion of my living from NPT threads on pipe, nothing faster or more consistent than the Landis die heads that were developed in 1900. Most of our machines were built pre 1970, many are pre WWII. we have a couple hundred of them. This is a 4 head bolt machine from the 40’s that we converted to thread pipe, Weighs 14,000lbs lol.

We only have to check 1 in 50 threads to ensure within spec. Could probably do 100 but if there is an issue could be a lot to rework.

I worked on one recently that was stamped “1914 US Navy” made me wish it could talk.

I wasn't clear, it is the female threads that I've had to gauge. As tapped into a certain aftermarket brake caliper mfg's production where they use NPT for all of the cross-over tube connections and the inlet fittings.

I had many plugs to choose from & ordered a small weld on bung & after drilling thru my diff cover I saw that with the Barnes cover being 7/16" plate that it was thicker than the plug was long I was going to use so...

So I tapped the cover deep enough so my plug would be flush with the cover. Never had a leak with the correct depth 1/4" NPT on other housings Ive done this to and with the recessed hex head plug on the 45deg face it should last a while..

Not as high-tech as the other methods but looks very "sani" in this application.

Pic later

Thought I'd finally post this.

This is STOOOPID! Why can't Ford do anything right?? :(

8 different timing chain covers for the sbf? Really? Grade school kids for engineers who can't get a d design right after 6 attempts?

SBC essentially have one, yes 1 tc cover for all yrs of small blks & they still fit & seal on Vortecs. Timing pointers, locator pins, oil pan radius but they can all be used and SEAL w/o leaks...

No wonder hot rodders hate Ford's. You need 8 different engines in the back yard to steal parts from instead of just one! lol

After seeing the Explorer cover and the very late 5.0 Mustang H2O pump I think that's the cover to use. Scrap all the rest of them.

Here's the Barnes cover for my 14 bolt with a new drain & plug. Plug is flush.
I also made sure my diff fluid doesn't have any limited slip additives since ARB recommends against it as it promotes premature seal failure.

I have seen more & more ARB seal failures (maybe because of the Internet) but in my town there was only one option for gear oil w/o additives.
So I did what we all do... ordered it off Amazon from Walmart!

Update; Forgot the pic

Arb seal failures give me the eeby geebies, just seen so many of them and so many out of the box, or working when and if they wanted to with no apparent leaks. Pulled a few recently and replaced them with grizzly’s due to owner dissatisfaction. These have all been on rear applications, fronts seem to be fine.

FWIW, so far my pneumatic-actuated OX has been flawless. Seems to engage and disengage much easier/better than the ARB's in the 4rnnr did. Although,I'm not likely to give it a real pounding, so my experiences with it are going to be more of the lots of miles driven than hammering it with a 100:1 reduction kind.

That's the trend I've been hearing also. :(

My 14 bolt ARB is only 6 yrs old but my HP D60 ARB was over 15 yrs old when I installed it. The seals were still in the sealed package and I'm running them... so far, so good...

I got 30 yrs out of my frt D44 ARB seals I bought in Feb or '87!! NO maintenance other than oil and frequent axle swaps until I went with CTM's and Superiors axles around '00. My 9" ARB seals never failed either and I didn't get it till the 1st gen came out around '96.

Hope these last... :)

Been sledding in Oregon the last 4 days... 14' at the snow pole which is about several feet less than what the level is at 7-7500ft level where we were playing mostly. We got 3ft of fresh on top of the 14ft at the snow pole and had the best snow conditions- not hard pack but 3ft of 2 day old snow on top of 14ft. WOW, great time and I was soaking wet (sweat) for hours at a time. lol Love it.

I could have screwed up bad by being lazy and not wanting to try to dig myself out of a 4ft deep hole as I was below the sled and then try to crawl uphill around my sled that was upside down & parallel to the hill (very steep bluff). I was below it as my re-entry turn worked great till it didn't :) this time (again)! lol
As I was looking at my sled I figured the slope wasn't steep enough for more than one side (of 4 sides) of the sled to move at a time... well, I was wrong. As I was waiting for my riding partners to arrive I started tugging and trying to roll it on to it's side down the hill (mistake) then I was going to have it roll onto it's track- still parallel to the hill.

Well, I kept working on it and I pulled it over as my buddy was coming in from below and they had to abrubtly stop as my sled rolled twice (not just once as I wanted)- onto it's track and almost stuffing me under it about 2ft further straight down because I couldn't get out of the way- I was lucky. The three of us dug for 25 min to get the other sled out. Mine motored right out.

Last year 3 of us spent 45 min digging a sled out of a tree well... (ooops - wasn't me) lol
