My oil pressure gauge is pegged. How can I tell if my sending unit is bad or what else should I check?

try a mechanical gauge in the port the sending unit is in, they are more reliable and will tell you what the real pressure is. If the pressure is 'good' you can either leave the gauge in it or repair it. I put a 9v battery to the post of the gauge in the cluster if it goes up about 3/4 the way then it must have been the sending unit. Even if you fix the cluster gauge I would keep the mechanical gauge in it too somewhere as it is the most telling gauge that you motor is crapping out.

You can also just jiggle the wire to make sure that doesn't change anything, then simply unplug the wire from the sender. If the gauge still pegs after disconnecting, it's not the sending unit.
If it goes to zero after disconnecting, get a new sender.

I bought one from a Ford dealer. Compared to the Autozone one, it was much more accurate for a simple sending unit.

Hi all. I need an oil pres. sending unit and the 3" extension. Muskrat stated he got his more accurate unit from Ford- my Ford dealer say they only have records for 1980+. How can I get Ford numbers for my 1973 Bronco? Thanks

Sorry, don't have the part number. And if someone does come up with it, there's still a chance that a particular Ford dealer won't bother with an old number like that unless they have an aftermarket supplier they can buy Motorcraft stuff from.
Or you could try buying Motorcraft from your local parts store. Many still carry that stuff and would also have a listing.

Not sure what brand we use, but have it if you can't find one locally. As well as the extension tube.

My oil pressure after cranking goes to around the 70 mark and hangs around there. Is that ok or ideal?

Sweet spot perfect.
Hopefully it's accurate of course, but that's the expected pressure on an engine in good condition using a thicker oil such as a 20w/40 or 20w/50 oil.
Does it go down to 40-50 ish when hot?

No. It goes from zero when you turn the key on to 70 or a tad above or below it just after cranking.

So that's all the time then, even when you've been driving it all day? That's pretty tight and mighty oil pressure.
Still don't think it's anything bad, as that's the expected cold pressure anyway, but it is unusual for it not to come down at least slightly when the oil is hot.
Not unheard of, but still uncommon.

What oil are you using?
What is the history or your engine? New, rebuilt or old?
Just curious

I'm not sure of the oil that's in it now. I pln on changing all the fluids this weekend since I just got it about two weeks ago and it spent a week in the shop. The engine is all original with 43,253 miles on it.

New part numbers supersede the old ones, but they are interchangeable.

B7T9278A, B7TZ9278A, C5TZ9278B, C6SZ9278A, C6SZ9278B, C9ZZ9278A, D9TZ9278A, D9ZZ9278A, D9ZZ9278B, E4ZZ9278A, E4ZZ9278B, E6ZZ9278A

The final '86 part # should be currently available.
