What is the camping situation like there? Is it a big field and people just set-up wherever? Is there a 'campground' or is it more, "hey, there is a flat-spot, set up the tent!"? I will check out the web-links again, but any additional info would be great.

Cheers!

John

The first couple of years of the Fawl Crawl at Harlan there was a big field near Evarts that the county allowed free camping on. I checked with one of the Harlan guys last week and that field will not be open this year - something about insurance . . . Most of the MEB group will be at the Putney side staying at the Harlan County Campground. They have a few hook up sites (all reserved I think), some cabins and a bunch of tent sites. The campground is located at the Putney trailhead. So no need to drive to the park - you're already there! Never priced the campsites so not sure how much they charge. Some people last year just stayed in their trucks in the parking area. Hope to see you there!

Got a tally of how many will be making it yet?
Guess we'll arrive around 8pm thursday. leave sunday morning.

Cesco has messed up my count :p but we'll probably have 20 to 25 Broncos / trail rigs there. Sounds like we will be leaving NoVA quite a bit before you. We want to try to get to Harlan around 3 or so on Thursday afternoon.

I am not going to make it.. I am still waiting on parts from ARB.

Too bad, Brian. Sorry to hear that. Can you come with Steve or bring Steve's rig?? I guess you've just borrowed "parts" from Steve, never his whole Bronco?? ;D

The campground actually has several separate areas for camping. All the hook up sites are near the road and office. Additional tent sites and some cabins are atually down the trail a bit. The campground IS the Putney Trailhead! Although this part of the trail is an easy trail (when dry!) and leads up the mountain to the more serious trails. It connects with the with trail head on the Everts side.

Only pics I have are of the hook up sites. The trial map attached is not real hi-res so it does not print well, but it will give you an idea of how big the property is and the trail system. I think they sell big maps at the compground office and at lots of businesses in town.

Right . . . and wrong!

The silver one with the blue hood is mine (so right on the paint mods). The orange with primer highlights (!) and hard top is Pearlcoat's (Judy's) trail rig. But her rig is now is all primer with a black Bestop. I know, hard to keep up with everybody's ongoing mods! ;D

This was my first trip to the MEB Fawl Crawl. I brought Kendall, We had a great time. We wheeled Sat and Sunday. Black mountain is a nice off road park. Gary did a nice job leading our group around. We had our lunch break with a wild horse both days. We had some really nice trail rides. I want to do it again! Here are some pics I took.

Here are some more pics. We seen this jeep break his front drive shaft in the lions den. I bet that took a while to get out.

Thanks, Terry. You did good at tail gunner too! That wild horse was pretty cool but he got a little aggressive when you ran out of food for him!

That jeep also put a hole in it's tranny pan - no telling how long it took to ge it out!! Hope you can make it next year.

Great week end! Weather was perfect. Rain on Thursday kept lots of the dust down the whole week end. Maybe a tad too cold for the tent campers (!) but other than that it was the best weather we've had at Harlan. The trails were marked really well this year - looks like they are actually using the park fees to maintain and improve! The more I wheel at Black Mountain the more I like it.

The only issue was it got pretty crowded on Saturday afternoon because of the KYMC Fall Crawl being that day. Couldn't even get near Lower Rock Garden on Saturday. I broke/bent the ears on my pass-side outer axle on Saturday and had to get back to camp in 2wd. Passing oncoming traffic on some of the narrow trails was sometimes as hard as some of the obsticals!

Only got to take a few pics, but here they are -
