Just some PRIZES FOR your frame...😁

IMG_7905.jpg

Fresh new parts on hand means we can get back to some frame fixin'

But first... we had some nice weather here the other day so I used that opportunity to rinse the accumulating dust off the 70.

Now back to that frame...

So today I started on the driver's side first, cut off the old shock mount and what was left of the bump stop bracket...

There was some rust through under those parts so a patch was welded in where the new shock mount would go before welding that on.
For the bump stop area I made a U shaped piece with provisions to mount the typical aftermarket bump stop to. After cutting the rusted holes back to good metal, the U shape piece is slipped on the frame rail from the bottom and welded all around to provide strength and integrity as well as a means to mount up the new bump stop.

I did get started on the passenger side as well, but only got as far as cutting the old parts off before calling it an early day.
Maybe tomorrow we'll get back to it...

Always little rust surprises under those mounts. Looks like you got a little more fixing to go. It will be all good when you are done.

Back at it today to finish off the passenger side. Cut out that bad spot behind the shock mount, made a new piece, welded and smoothed it out. Ready to fit up the new parts.

And speaking of new parts, how about a shout out to Wild Horses for carrying some decent quality replacement rear shock mounts. They are very similar to the factory originals in that they are machined from a piece of solid stock vs most others I've seen which are variations of a bolt welded to the end of a tube or the like.

Now to just weld it on in the right spot...😁

Once that was determined, it was tacked in place along with the bump stop fix and then they were all welded up.

So that's about it for major rust repair on this frame, might still have a couple of body mount holes to deal with and fix but that's minor.
Next up should be prepping for some more fresh paint.

Everything was mig welded. Had some good sized gaps to fill on those shock mount gussets due to the slightly oversize width spacing of the new mounts and the positioning to get the correct angle that I wanted/needed. That's probably something worth noting in case someone else finds this when planning to do that job...
If these mounts were just placed on the frame with the gusset pressed tight against the frame then the inside support may protrude too far towards the fuel tank and interfere with it due to the bracket spacing being slightly wider than that of the frame rail, and also, the end where the shock actually mounts would be at a flatter angle and not tipped up as high as it should be.

That’s what I thought, but wasn’t sure when I looked at one of the pics. I’m enjoying following along with your project, and again, nice work. I wish I had more time to get into projects like that myself

Time for a quick update.

After welding those parts on the other day this is where we left off at:

Moving a bit further up the frame removing some old paint, grime and scale:

It's just about ready for some....

Wow - I don't think I've ever seen rust holes under the shock mounts like that before! Very nice repairs going on here! Looks like Tasker has a set of LIncoln Mark V rear discs on his truck?

Are those bump stop pieces a repair piece that someone makes? Or did you make them?
