doing my typical, putting anyone’s wife, girl friend, or kid I can get behind the wheel, drive down Hells Gate and back up Devils Staircase. Doing my part to make sure they feel involved, give them the opportunity to drive without the pressure of their significant other in a calm and mostly controlled manor. I’ve even been known to drive folks rigs down and up that say it won’t do it, as long as they will ride shotgun. It’s only hard between the ears

My daughter loves to drive but with as much time off she gets, it's hard to get any real hours for her behind the wheel.

Totally enjoy taking people for calm, easy going rides. It's what I do if I'm not in deep snow or on sand dunes.

I’ve spent 1/2 a day there making laps, just enjoying people and allowing them to experience some adrenaline where there’s a 1000 roll over videos of an obstacle and show them that, staying calm and follow easy, calm instructions it works with no fan fair. I will say I may be a little too comfortable with my rig’s ability, I’ve tried everything everyone says is wrong to prove it’s not a problem, except make a hard left turn at the ledge near the top, that’s what causes all of the metal bending excitement. For some reason if they are watching a spotter they loose them there and 9 times out if 10 they turn left. Then you get to ride the roof to the bottom.

Bronco Hauler update.

Well, the USS Nimitz was making a little noise on it's first trip and here's what the #3 cyl on the pass side looks like..

A diesel mechanic friend said it looks like the injector could have been spraying waaaay too much fuel on the clean side of the piston. Essentially washing the cyl which has cause alum to be sticking to the cyl wall.

No smoke or color when running.

Short block or long block time.

Then I have a Bronco 4x4 hauler for sale.

I'm sending the injectors off to get them flow tested.

4th one... look close as it seems like it's coming from the core to tank seam. All 3 other failures were tank to core seam failures also.

I got 3 replaced on warranty & they are done with that.

So am I, going back to copper/brass. I had a Griffin that was stocked at all large auto retailers like Summit, Jegs, Speed... etc, etc. Thought I had quick access to a replacement in case a stick went thru it on a trip but I can't find anything OE that is a direct replacement and my tube frt end is built around this-literally.

US Radiator is what I'm looking at now. Any other good builders?

I have looked thru 8 yrs of Ford cars/trucks since I have an Exploder hose setup and nothing OE so far will fit.

Yeah, here I was thinking that something w/40k miles would just need maintenance for the next 100k miles... what a dreamer! LOL.

New short blk is in, injectors are all checked OK but replaced one marginal one.

Should be a good runner when done. (I think I said this already).

Stiffening things up...

Not much clearance for the 40"s behind the headlight bucket since I'm nowhere close to full width (to fit btw the trees here in the PNW.

Mock up time w/EMT, then some tubing. I drove up on an ecology block to stuff the tire some. The tape measure was to help figure out if the 5" of chrome showing on the ORI would allow the tire to stuff that much more & clear the new hoop around the bottom of the hdlt

Learned something "new" today since I hadn't paid attention b4. Headlight adjusters are the same left to right meaning one of the adjuster screws are on the frame rail side on DS & the other one is on the fender side. It reminded me of a project I was in charge of decades ago where I said, let's make it as cheap as we can... and Ford did! lol.

Least my tubes can be the same size from side to size- at least within a 1/4" for clearance of the adjusting screw.

F550 hauler/cruiser update... That chapter is officially over. Not going to miss it.

Back to my V10's and a cardboard house bolted to the frame. lol Insurance is obtainable, engines are cheaper and there's a market so back to an RV. I would like more gears in the tranny so I have a choice between 25mph in 1st gear or... nothing for long steep inclines like coming out of Death Valley and the dozen or more other hills where I'm stuck in first for 10+ minutes. Would like a trans that could take the abuse of a turbo so I don't need to buy a diesel rig for cruising up a mtn pass at 60 mph instead of 40mph several times/day. Maybe the better gear splits with a 6 speed and another 20hp from the newer V10's will make the difference. I don't mind that much cruising up the hill at 35 mph when 18 wheelers are blowing past me but...

OK, put my typical 160 miles + this week since the sun's out and the lows are 12F and highs are below freezing and I got my 6r80's temp up to 154deg!!! WooooHooo.

I cover every sq in of it with cardboard during the winter months to try to get and keep the temp up. It's painted black so it looks "great". lol

It's cold out. Our creek freezes from the bottom up so the top layer of ice just gets higher and higher! lol Decades ago it was sooo deep I had a CAT944C track excavator in the creek busting the 4 + feet of ice. He worked his way up from several neighbors a 1/4 mile downstream and as I was watching him from 12ft away on the bank (no cell phone back then) I got his attention as a WALL of ice and water came roaring down the creek. He turned it dnstream and the ice/water flow came up OVER the engine compartment and within a couple inches of the engine air intake. Whew....

Anyway, the banks are 8ft high here, my bridge beams are 9' above the bottom of the creek. There is another 30 ft of bridge alongside this main channel. A lot of water comes thru here at times...

Well, I was due to change the 14 bolt diff fluid & why, why did I even TAKE THE COVER OFF... I can't remember the manufacturer.

Because now that you have the cover off you can install fill and drain plugs. I used these: https://www.mcmaster.com/4835K26/ and these: https://www.pegasusautoracing.com/productselection.asp?Product=AF996S for a nearly flush fill and drain port/plug, and a bigger version of each for the inspection port on both of the Wagon's diff covers.

I need to pull mine, it’s seeping…. But that’s going to be work, you can see the bottom bolt threads in the casting. So it’s not getting touched until it leaks more than just being wet and actually drips. Maybe by then I’ll have the bolt head worn off

Sounds like you don't really need the bolt, keep grinding on it and soon it will be less unsprung weight.

My diff cover needed some grinding to remove several shards of metal sticking out. Glove & finger catchers for sure!

Me too…. Why does every modern transfer case use them for fill and drain plugs? At least in my atlas I can connect a #6 fitting and hose to pump the fluid in with the sight gauge still connected so I know when to stop.
