Anyone install a 5-speed tranny? which one?

What kind of torque is your 351w producing? per http://www.f150hub.com/specs/351w.html stock is something like:
1969 carb motor 380 ftlbs at 3400
1997 efi 325 at 2800
1997 efi 330 at 2600
lightning 340 @ 3400

I may ask again in 6 months as that is likely when I will be installing a tranmission.

For my use the NV3550 has been great.
It has a first gear that is an actual first gear and meant for street use. The heavier five speeds have a first gear that's too low for the street and should be considered a four speed overdrive with a "granny gear."
Also, the overdrive gear on a NV3550 isn't as high as some of the others. This can be beneficial if you're gear ratio is on the high side for some of the other overdrive trannys. For example, I have 4.11 gears and 33" tires. If I had used any of the automatic overdrive options, my gear ratio would be way on the high side.
Research the tech section of this site in the transmission section. There's a lot if info on the particular ratios.

Good question, I really don't no. I have an '81 351W that underwent a standard rebuild. The Bronco definitely isn't lacking power though. ;D

I'll have to let you know how the AX-15 feels in 6 months!

Installed a new AX15 in the wife's Bronco three weeks ago (replaced NP-435 since it is going to see less trail time). I am very happy with the driveabilty.
I have two Broncos with the ZF-5 W/short throw shifters, and the AX-15 shifts nicer.

i did the nv3550 swap less work involved to install no body lift required i have 33 tires and 3.50 gear
great on highway 70mph about 2100 rpm love it

Nv3550/AX15 swaps are almost identical in length as a stock 3 speed so you can keep the stock driveshafts. M5OD uses the stock clutch and pressure plate and only needs the transfer case adapter, but is longer so needs new/modified driveshafts.

I really like my M5OD and I'm running 35's and 4.56 gears. Works really well considering my stock emissions choked and tired 302.

cool thank you, the M5OD is the only one that I have had, seemed like a pretty good transmission.

The 4.2 V6 version has a shift tower that is farther back than the SBF version.
It puts the shifter about the middle of the flat part of the tunnel cover, instead of crowded up by the dash.

The big problem with the Mazda transmissions is the rubber plug. It ages and falls out. And that lets the oil spray out of the hole and the transmission then runs dry. There is a metal plug (freeze plug) that will fit that hole and keep that problem from happening. Its about a $2 fix to keep a good transmission a good transmission.

Im running a mild 351w, nv3550 with 4.88s and 35s. Overall i am pretty happy with it i can pull in 5th gear runs 3000 rpm at 80 mph and has plenty of power around town

I think the NV3550 is just Jeep. It might be Dodge, but definitely not Chevy. Chevy used the NV3500 which is the same guts, but in a case with an integral bellhousing for a Chevy engine. The NV3550 uses a separate bell so you can adapt the trans to a Ford bell.

My exact setup, OD is great.

Icon puts the AX15, with the Coyote, in their Broncos. they are rated at 400 Lbs torque. The new AX 15 is not the same as the original, and is still available new. Check the Rockwell Standard Gear or Novak conversions website.

88 to 96 IIRC. Also available in Broncos as well as F150's. The 4.2 4x4 version is good from 97 to 2004.

Lots of good info here but witch one is best? In terms of fab work, parts cost, ease of installation? I want to do this on my rig now has 3 speed, 302, 4:11 38.5 tires may go back to 35 one day. Road use and some wheeling.

The easiest one to put in or the cheapest one to put in may not be the one most suited to the use you want it for.
First decide whether cost or ease or function is most important.
