Star

Okay, another question that I meant to ask and so did Kevin Marti. On my white tag pictured above, there is a four-legged star stamped in the upper left corner. Somewhat hard to see but it is there. Anyone else have this and if so, same location on the tag and any idea what this means? I am thinking a star for completion? Kinda like when you were in grade school for papers and such. tim

Jeremy,

Can we get another pic with the flash off? And perhaps turn the macro setting on for a close up shot? Curious what is on that one. I did the same thing removing my tag when driving, drove me nuts listening it beat against the firewall. You can see the scare marks from it swinging side to side on the firewall. Also, I had the original hole that the wire fed through wear a slot though it. Have to flip it now or I would lose it!

Thanks, tim

I'll take another photo of it. I took that one back when I first got this Bronco. At the time I thought it was removed from another location and wired there for safe keeping. It took me a long time to figure out what the mystery sound from under the hood was. The tag makes a lot less noise in the glove box! Photo shortly.

Here is another photo of the tag. The wife has the camera so I took it with my phone. If you want it, I can take a better one with the camera when she gets home. Let me know.

Nice and there is that star! Different location on the tag too.

The terminology is correct in that the metal tag was called a "buck tag". This was to identify any unique parts that would be required during body construction. If the body had drilling required for unique mirrors or moulding this was what the operator in the body shop would look at to decide what he needed to do for that particular vehicle. In the 60's and 70's this was how you identified unique features or options in the body shop. Can't remember when "bar code" came into play that would have changed that. Paint shop also referred to this tag for selecting what color to manually spray the vehicle when it entered the paint booth. (this was prior to paint automation and robots) Ask me how I know this??? Worked for Ford Motor 32 years and been retire for 11, even spent 3 years at Michigan Truck plant!

Ok, I'm having a hard time getting a clear picture of mine, but here's what the first two lines read:

OPCAR BSDP RS [STAR STAMP]
LG ROOF MIR HTR

I haven't seen the OPCAR or RS in any of the previous posts above. I wonder what these mean?

I was not questioning if the term was correct, I was just wondering why it's called a "Buck Tag". I thought maybe it was an acronym or something.

Bfoldy,

Here is another one that was sent to me today from a bronco brother. I asked for permission to post.

Here is his email:

Sorry I cannot post pics at classicbroncos.com haven't figured that out yet.
I know it is not a roadster but worth the info.
Attached is a pic of the BUCK TAG off of my 67 Sport it looks the same as a 66 but with some odd codes but I think I have decoded it.
MLDG= body side moldings
RPNL= rocker panel moldings
SPT= sport model
OPCAR= I think this has something to due with the parchment sport floor covering that mine does not have or any evidence that it ever did (no screw holes for hold downs). It may stand for optional carpet.
BSDP= bucket seats dash pad
LGROOF= long roof
MIRK= mirror k must mean 2 mirrors or chrome because it has 2 smaller than 68 chrome mirrors
HTR= heater

HBH in the left corner I have not a clue.

Let me know if you come up with something different.

Lance

I will have to tell and teach Lance how to post.

Interesting and great information again!! Perhaps someone else can help with the unknown codes in question.

tim

Another One Yet

Here is another buck tag from a fellow roadster owner, Scott C. His is a survivor with the tag shoved in the glove box. Removed probably because of that clanking noise from the tag hanging on the firewall.

Are we sure that BSDP is Bucket Seat Dash Pad? My tag has that and my PO told me it used to have a Bench Seat. Could it be Bench Seat Dash Pad?

Here are some other ideas

WSW= white side wall tires
BSDP= buckets seat driver and passanger
RS= rear seat
OPCAR= open cargo (no bulkhead)
SPT= spare tire mount

I've had 150+ Broncos and have only 2 with buck tags, a 66 U13, and a 71 U15.
